Vocalist Anna Lies has a powerfully light voice that melts over our ears in sweet, harrowing emotions. “Ohhh, not jazzed about it,” she sings of her partner’s plans with an ex, following up to that by clarifying, “I’m not crying, love.”

“Coffee Sundae” is, in many ways, an emotional unveiling of all the insecurities we wish we could tell our significant (or insignificant) others – the many secrets we keep to ourselves, for better or for worse. “The whole song kind of dabbles in feelings of jealousy, at times diving head first into them and at times attempting to compose them,” The Vaughns explain. “It was a challenging song to piece together, but we are happy with how quirky and fun it turned out. We owe a big thanks to our producer Erik Romero at Lakehouse Recording Studios and our pal Bruce Krywinski for killing it on trumpet.
In addition to its ability to strip down to that purely vulnerable state, “Coffee Sundae” also boasts a unique song structure: With its constantly moving, forward-driving motion, you never quite know where The Vaughns will take the song next. “The verse riffs and melodies came easy to me, but from there we kept coming up with new parts and didn’t know how to piece them together,” Anna Lies tells Atwood Magazine. “For example, Tom brought in that badass bridge riff that comes in the middle and closes the song. We got some direction when Dave contributed the chord progression that fits the sing along chorus at the end. Then a few days before recording, Ryan came up with the bouncy verse drum beat, which I really think brings the song together. When we play it live, I notice people swaying as soon as the drums kick in.”
