I think it can be consoling to know that despite the fact isolation with another won’t last, it can be a huge step in becoming a more authentic version of yourself.

A sweet burst of sun-kissed harmonies soar at the start of Wax Owls’ latest single. Like a big musical hug, it wraps itself around us and squeezes – not too tight to suffocate, but just tight enough for us to know someone’s there for us; that someone cares. Tender and heartfelt, “Lie for Me” is a beautifully radiant song embracing intimacy, connection, and the cathartic comfort we feel when we can truly be vulnerable and ourselves with someone close.

Lie for Me – Wax Owls
Tell me all the grief
That I asked for, had it coming
Or say it’s just a dream
Give me time to waste
If you offered, if it felt right
Like a amber muted scene
But when I call, late at night
Would you wake, are you hoping for someone
Else to go wade in the tide

Independently released August 25, 2022, “Lie for Me” arrived late this summer as Wax Owls’ first single of the year – and a very special one, at that. The Los Angeles-based band composed of Gerry Hirschfeld (singer/songwriter), Chris Tsaganeas (drums), and Bobby Kay (bass) have been dazzling the ears and touching our hearts with two years’ worth of beautiful indie folk, having debuted in September 2020 with the captivating “Set It Free” and spent much of the following year introducing themselves through a monthly singles campaign. “Lie for Me” is the band’s tenth overall track release following last December’s “Never Alone,” and it finds Wax Owls combining all the elements that have made their previous songs so instantly accessible and relatable: Touching lyrics, rich harmonies, soaring melodies, and gentle acoustic instrumentation prove a winning combination for this rising trio, who are already no strangers to this magazine.

Lie for me
It remains, it remains, what remains
Lie for me
Is it justified
Give or take, hesitate, just the same

”’Lie For Me’ is about those unique friendships/relationships that are totally insulated from the rest of the world,” Wax Owls’ principal songwriter and vocalist Gerry Hirschfeld explains. “The kind that are totally separate from our normal social group and exist only privately. For me, this isolation creates a strange juxtaposition where I can be totally honest and open with the other person because it is hidden from the rest of the world. In some situations, hiding actually makes it easier to not hide. Everything confided stays there; safe…the Vegas of friendships. It reminded me of asking someone to lie for you as a form of protection. But you also can’t hide forever and relationships like that can’t last forever. I think it can be consoling to know that despite the fact isolation with another won’t last, it can be a huge step in becoming a more authentic version of yourself.”

If I understand, why you came here
I am honestly amazed that you stayed
But if she calls, late at night
When I wake, I was hoping for something
I couldn’t wait for the tide
Lie for me
It remains, it remains, what remains
Lie for me
Is it justified
Give or take, hesitate, just the same

We are most comfortable when we’re in our own skin, but seldom do we get the opportunity to be our truest selves. Too often there’s an angle or a part to play, and we have to hide something away; those relationships that drop all pretense are often few and far between. “Lie for Me” is special not because of its chorus’ lie for me request, but because it embraces a kind of relationship we all too often overlook or take for granted, when truly those kinds of intimate friendships are one-of-a-kind.

from the best that I can tell

The curtains, drop and its done
Hats off, you’re made on the stage

Give or take, hesitate, just the same
