Where do you go when you’re lonely?

Black Match’s latest single opens with an innocent, outstreched hand. “Head down in the sunshine state, I called your phone it was getting late,” Hannah Kenny sings, her fragile voice brimming with tenderness as it delicately leaps through intervals, a vocal acrobat. “I heard your voice with all its worry, don’t remember much else it’s all just blurry.” Supported by a lone guitar at the start, the weight of concern hangs off every word as Black Match build raw bones of magical indie pop experience. Radiating with a poignant, knowing love, “Cover Your Eyes” is a caring, pained message on the power and impact of being there for others in their time of need.

Head down in the sunshine state,
I called your phone it was getting late
I heard your voice with all its worry,
don’t remember much else it’s all just blurry
Right there we were wrapped in doubt,
there were no words waiting in my mouth
Showed you I cared in ways I knew how,
just to wrap ourselves up

Released July 23, 2019 via AWAL, “Cover Your Eyes” is the latest single off Black Match’s forthcoming debut EP Nowhere (forthcoming release date), and their fifth overall song release since they introduced themselves and their music last summer. The San Luis Obispo-based dream folk duo of singer/songwriters Hannah Kenny and Ian Kizanis, Black Match are pop-savvy dreamweavers who know exactly the right heartstrings to tug at, at just the right time. Their inviting, upbeat folk-pop sound is akin to Atwood Magazine favorites Smith & Thell and The National Parks ,and over the past year they’ve dazzled through such wondrous songs as their debut single “Won’t Let Go,” “Same Old Things,” and this year’s critically-acclaimed song “Nowhere.”

A short, driving track pushing forward with a sense of urgency, “Cover Your Eyes” finds Black Match reveling in a special moment of intimate connection.

“‘Cover Your Eyes’ is an exploration of the dark places we often fall into,” Black Match tell Atwood Magazine. “These lyrics reflect the idea that when someone is in a hard place, it takes a person close to them to jump into the trenches and work through hardship with them. If someone cares to meet them there, and is indeed let in, then a certain magic happens as you sit in the dark with someone you love, no longer alone, navigating the way out.”

We hope the song inspires us all to not only be there for others, but to let others into our dark places.

Where do you go when you’re lonely
Why won’t you stay when we fall apart
Will you come back here and hold me
Cover your eyes and
Show me a way through the dark
Show me a way through the dark
Show me a way through the dark
Show me a way through the dark

Where do you go when you’re lonely?” Kenny asks in a chorus full of passion and wholehearted concern. “Why won’t you stay when we fall apart?” The line blurs between between helper and helped as we sense the power of the human touch. As the band noted earlier, we are better together: When we dwell in our darkest spaces alone, it’s so easy to stay down in those depths. When we let someone else in, we have that much greater a chance at rising up and climbing out of those pits together – with a loved one; a friend; or just someone who sensed they were needed.

Through rich vocal harmonies and pulsing, catchy rhythms, Black Match turn a relatively sparse instrumentation into a wealth of sound. “Cover Your Eyes” isn’t just a song for the lonely or sad; it’s a song we can all relate to, from both perspectives. Whether you want to close your eyes and dance to the feelgood groove, or slip into a moment of deeper emotional introspection, Black Match’s “Cover Your Eyes” is an affecting and worthwhile indulgence. Stream the single below, and stay tuned for more from this breathtaking duo as they ramp up toward their debut EP release!
