Shoutout to the garbage men out there, because this song wouldn’t exist without you.

Some songs take time to leave a mark, their words or melodies sneaking up on us over a period of days or weeks – first taking over the subconscious and then, eventually, our conscious mind. Other songs impact us right away – instantly and unashamedly inserting themselves into every aspect of our waking lives, playing in our heads on repeat. Hedda Mae’s latest single is one such song – a defiant outpouring of radiant, finessed pop, the Britney Spears-inspired “Mr. Big Mouth” soars with lively, unrelenting energy and unapologetic f-you passion.

Didn’t you get my memo? (what?!)
Careful where you talk

Mr big mouth is round the block
everybody knows him by his walk
say it with me now yeaaa
the stranger in the room
could be him dressed in his costume
no one can tell what he’s up to
but he never wastes his time

Incredibly active despite debuting just last year, Hedda Mae hits home with youthful grace and infectious ambition.

The 22-year-old pop newcomer released the six-track Introducing: Hedda Mae EP just last October, followed by the dual English/Norwegian language De Neste cover songs EP in April.

Released June 25, 2021 via GEMS, “Mr. Big Mouth” is the third single off the Bergen, Norway-based artist’s forthcoming third EP, set for release later this summer. It’s the latest track in a series of songs that find Mae embracing some of modern pop’s earlier roots: The urgent “Take It Or Leave It” and the R&B-inflected ballad “Until the Night Falls” already recalled late ’90s and early ’00s mainstream sounds and styles, and now “Mr. Big Mouth” brings that era to the fore once again with a strong, surging pulse and undeniable attitude.

Influenced and inspired by Britney Spears’ music and the popular Free Britney movement, “Mr. Big Mouth” characterizes the crude, lowlife members of our society who prey off others in order to gain power, influence, and fame. The titular subject of the song, like the many paparazzi and media personalities (mostly men) who trivialized, condescended, and reduced Britney Spears to an object (of self-destruction) during the early aughts, is someone who will take advantage of what you do and what you say – so you better watch your back, and be careful how you act!

Mae explodes in a chorus full of gusto and sheer, untethered drive:

Mr. big mouth ’bout to be pulling up
so be aware of what you say
I tell you that boy’s
dangerous get back, he’ll cover
every thought that you utter
his soulless black nirvana
is feeding on ya drama
spreading your words like it’s butter
he’ll blow the gaff, don’t you know better
his soulless black nirvana
is feeding on ya drama

“I wrote ‘Mr. Big Mouth’ with Benjamin Giørtz after watching the ‘Free Britney’ documentary,” Hedda Mae tells Atwood Magazine. “I took some inspiration from the documentary that was released, where among other things there was a focus on how badly she was treated by the media and paparazzi. It describes a person who’s not reliable and who’s looking to create trouble.”

“I originally pictured this song to be about gossiping and rumours, as I found the phrase ‘Big Mouth’, but it turned out to be strongly influenced by the way Britney was treated by the media. Writing ‘Mr. Big Mouth’ has been some of the most fun I’ve had writing a song.”

but seriously do you ever read my memos? listen:
he don’t wanna see ya
He don’t wanna meet ya
he’s in it for the catfights
find him going meow
and he never wastes his time
mr big mouth bout to be pulling up
so be aware of what you say

With a larger-than-life sound and the personality, confidence, and spunk to match, Hedda Mae is shooting to become the next queen of Norwegian pop. With a fast-growing fanbase and an insatiable stage presence, the title may not be as far off as one would think; if anything, “Mr. Big Mouth” and its sweet, sensational hooks establishes the young trailblazer as a indie pop princess deserving of a crown.

“Mr. Big Mouth” may feel at times like a true blast from pop’s past, but the song is definitively of the here and now – a high-spirited, sassy outpouring of warning signs and lessons learned the hard way, it’s a tribute to and a rallying cry for Spears all at once. 2021 is shaping up to be a defining year for Hedda Mae, and she’s certainly made it one to remember with the dynamic “Mr. Big Mouth,” a catchy, fun song dripping with swagger and style.

Careful where you talk
Mr Big Mouth is round the block
everybody knows him by his walk
Careful where you talk
Mr big mouth is round the block
so come on, ooh
He might seem like a gentleman, but
that bitch gon’ rub you the wrong way
spreading your words like
it’s butter
he’ll blow the gaff, don’t you
know better
his soulless black nirvana
is feeding on ya drama
