Trying but I’m out of luck, now walls are closing in,” sings a feverish Benjamin Carter in his latest single. Sometimes we can’t save ourselves from the onslaught around us; sometimes the chaos takes hold and swallows us whole. There’s nothing like the trepidation and gut-wrenching fear of feeling our grip slowly slipping away, and in “Lost Control,” Benjamin Carter sends his own SOS through an eruption of raw reeling and heated, churning urgency.

Lost Control – Benjamin Carter
I feel like I talk too much
I’m always losing friends
Caught me crying once again
No not fair you said no one was in there
I feel like I’m not enough
You picked on all my sins
Caught me lyin once again
I swear I thought no one would get hurt
I’m sorry, so sorry…
I’ll get better

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the Leo Budirahardjo and Chris Graziano directed music video for “Lost Control,” Benjamin Carter’s first single of 2022. Independently released April 26, “Lost Control” sees the Washington, DC-based singer/songwriter bridging the indie pop and pop-punk worlds as he delivers a dynamic, polished (and undeniably catchy) explosion of both music and emotion.

“‘Lost Control’ is a cry for help, to put it as bluntly as possible,” Carter tells Atwood Magazine. There’s anguish in his voice as he sends these flares flying, raisubg the temperature on an impassioned, high-energy chorus:

Is this real
Tell me tell me what the hell
Am I really Looking for
If you’re near
Help me ‘cause I’m ‘bout to lose
Control…

“The song sonically resembles my personality and how I handle my emotions, sometimes unfortunately in unhealthy ways,” Carter shares. “It’s me trying to make the situation fun, it’s sarcastic in the pre-chorus, it’s energetic, it’s angry at points… [The] emotions in the lyrics are very visual, from catching me crying and me screaming, ‘I thought no one was in there,’ or in verse two, saying how I don’t fit in, yet it’s ‘not fair because I feel like I was here first.’”

The idea of this song is a question or a prayer asking whoever is listening to give me a sign, give me anything to hold onto before I lose control.

Set in a haunted house of sorts, the “Lost Control” music video brings Carter’s reeling to life with dramatic and colorful flare. We watch his slow descent into a madness of sorts as he looks right into the camera, bridging the fourth wall in such a way that leaves us, the audience, feeling exposed.

Trying but I’m out of luck
Now walls are closing in
You say that I don’t fit in
Not fair I feel like I was here first
I’m ,oving but I’m always stuck
I’m tryna be my own man
I feel like I got a chance
I swear some days I wish I’d just learn

Perhaps that’s the point: We all lose control from time to time, and anyone can succumb to life’s sheer weight and innumerable pressures. Carter’s video doesn’t add distance; it brings us closer to him than ever before.
