Stream: “In View” – Cosial

I wanna, wanna crawl into your head, get under the surface…

There’s an intimacy and an immediacy to Cosial’s new single.

It’s as if everything she’s singing needs to be spilled out all at once, before she can think twice about things and keep it bottled up. Tender and charming, unrelenting and unfiltered, “In View” is a beautiful indie pop confessional full of teenage angst and insecurity, heart-on-sleeve passion and raw, visceral emotion.

In View - Cosial
In View – Cosial
I wanna, wanna crawl into your head
Get under the surface
A sinking feeling hits me like lead
Did you miss your train on purpose
Did you feel the need to delay seeing my face
Seeing your life’s work crumble
You’re always walking in a straight line
Never notice I stumble

It’s amazing how much feeling – and how much story – one can pack into two minutes’ time, if they only try. Independently released July 12, 2023, “In View” is a glistening and gorgeous reintroduction to Cece Fallow’s musical identity Cosial, who earlier this very year set the bar extremely high with April’s debut EP, SPORTS.

You’re always walking in a straight line, never notice I stumble…

“Her voice is a vessel of exhaustion and yearning as, at 19, she trudges through her own visceral, palpable teenage angst as it happens in real time,” Atwood Magazine wrote of the Manchester, UK-based artist for our 97th Editor’s Picks feature. “Searing, soaring, and soul-stirring, Cosial’s music holds nothing back… She has without a doubt laid a solid, if not altogether seductive foundation with her debut EP, inviting all to dwell in her turbulent world as she comes of age and shares all the ugly – and beautiful – details.”

Comparable to artists like girlhouse and Wallice and taking cues from the likes of Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo, Cosial blends indie rock, indie pop, and indie folk influences together with achingly vulnerable lyrics and deeply emotive performances. Her music is reflective of the young adult experience: Discovering yourself through trial and error; falling and getting back up again; learning life’s big lessons the hard way.

Editor's Picks 97: Scott Orr, deem spencer, Cosial, Lizzie Esau, The Maddocks, & Alma Mater!

“In View” feels like another diary entry brought to life in vivid song as Cosial sings to a love interest, transferring her innermost thoughts and feelings from pen and page, to voice and sound.

I’m sorry that I left; I never want to,” she admits in a cathartic, catchy chorus. “I saw a perfect picture wanted to keep it in view.” Funny how self-fulfilling prophecies come so often to us over-thinkers, whether through intentional fumbles or unintended consequences of our anxiety-fueled actions.

I’m sorry that I left I never want to
I saw a perfect picture wanted to keep it in view
I came home and my t shirt smelled like you
That was maybe the worst thing you could do

For Cosial, “In View” is both bittersweet and bright – a poignant story, wrapped in a moment of exciting musical growth.

“This song is about liking someone, but overthinking and self-sabotaging it through fear of attachment – like you’re not in control of the destructive response to those feelings,” Cece Fallow tells Atwood Magazine. “I think the surface level lyrics are a lot mellower than my previous stuff that maybe had more negative / dark themes behind it. But I feel like it does carry some of that subtly in the self-sabotaging aspect, but in a much lighter way than previous stuff. Musically, I took inspiration from some of my favourite artists, like Soccer Mommy, Alvvays, Snail Mail, Clairo, and Lucy Dacus.”

“I think this song shows where I’m headed,” Fallow adds. “It’s definitely a step up from my previous stuff as I’ve grown a lot since then, so this and future things coming up will hopefully put that maturity level forward. Not massively, maybe just a slight step away from the whole ’17-year-old angst’ vibe of my EP. I think my songs are just a documentation of me growing up, so it makes sense that stuff changes with me.”

I don’t wanna be the friction in your jeans
I just wanna pull on your heartstrings
So I told you I’m sick of seventeen
I’d had a feeling you’d been counting
I’m sorry that I left I never want to
I saw a perfect picture wanted to keep it in view
I came home and my t shirt smelled like you
That was maybe the worst thing you could do

I think my songs are just a documentation of me growing up, so it makes sense that stuff changes with me.

I’m sure that one day
I’ll have some self-respect
But if you wanna come over
I wouldn’t object
Left with my thoughts for one day
And I’m planning my death
I mean come on
No one wants to float around in this head

One thing is certainly true of “In View”: We don’t have to wonder too hard about what Cosial might have been thinking or feeling whilst she was in the heat of this strained moment. She shares her full self in song, balancing authentic desire and innocent longing on one hand with that pervasive, nagging doubt and fear on the other. “I’m sure that one day I’ll have some self-respect, but if you wanna come over, I wouldn’t object,” she sings, a twinkle in her self-deprecating singing. “… I mean come on, no one wants to float around in this head.

“In View” is brutally honest and achingly beautiful: A moving snapshot of a brooding teenage heart during one of its (many) moments of raw reckoning. She’s right in that we don’t necessarily want to come float around that head of hers, but we certainly don’t mind its output – especially when the songwriting is this heartfelt and the music this spellbinding.

I’m sorry that, I left I never want to
I saw a perfect picture wanted to keep it in view
I came home and my t shirt smelled like you
That was maybe the worst thing you could do
