Always genre-blending and vibe setting, Idris Vicuña, better known as Eyedress, ends the year on a high note in “A Room Up in the Sky.”

Coming off the 28-track project, FULL TIME LOVER, 2023 saw Eyedress shift focus to singles and collaborations up until the final weeks of the year. “A Room Up In The Sky (feat. The Marías)” released via RCA Records on December 15 was the final part of Eyedress’ unofficial claymation trilogy and second single with the psychedelic soul band The Marías.

A truly collaborative project, “A Room Up In The Sky” was co-produced by Grammy Award-winner John Hill (i.e. Cage The Elephant, Khalid, Carly Rae Jepsen) with creative input from MacDemarco. The additional influences, however, never negate the track itself from sounding authentically Eyedress. The LA-based singer/songwriter and producer known for his shoegaze style of guitar combined with eerie lingering vocals finds a way to mesh both his and The Marías unique forms on psychedelic sound.

A distant whirring introduces the track setting a fuzzy tone that almost immediately numbs the senses in preparation for the transcendent journey Eyedress is about to embark on. Floating between realities, he fills the space with dreamlike guitars and velvety synthesizers. Even with a limited number of sound sources the track crafts auditory hallucinogens that pair with the visual ones Eyedress narrates about:

Our grass is so green
But it took some time

No ground underneath
I had to let go
Of all of my fears
So, that I could float.

Simplistic yet highly vivid each line saturates imagery and feeling. In conjunction with the writing, each piece of instrumentation is thoughtfully selected to convey the physical sensation of his voyage.

In discussing the lyrical content, Eyedress explains this notion of release that encompasses the piece: “Lyrically, I was talking about how my life changed for the better when I stopped doubting myself… allowing myself to let go of that negativity really turned my life around and helped me become who I was meant to be.”

The “room up in the sky” serves as a kind of peek into the paradise of pure bliss. It’s not the final destination per se, but it’s a rumination on what that place of contentment and freedom could feel like. Letting go of his self-imposed burdens, Eyedress’ weightlessness allows him to drift through the sky: I feel so at ease, Do whatever we want.

Where “Separate Ways” (featuring The Marias) was more of your typical collaboration, “A Room Up In The Sky” sees The Marías take a bit of a back seat and offer support through lead singer María Zardoya’s vocals in the main chorus’ harmonies. Zardoya’s hypnotic falsettos are the perfect sonic symbol for this ambient and omniscient voice that lives in the sky while she recites: Meet me with a glass of wine, in a room up in the sky, in a room up in the sky.

As the voice from above, Zardoya invites Eyedress to join her for a drink to experience a glimpse of relief and the euphoria of release.
