Slow breathing comes easy. Let’s make believe that I can get you out of my head…

Summer may feel like a distant memory these days, but Oh My Sun are bringing back that sweet heat with a dreamy, hypnotic, and sun-kissed sound.

The group’s debut single is as seductive and invigorating as it is utterly enchanting: A sweaty, folksy haze of sonic warmth and musical wonder, “5 Pieces” invites us to bask in a moment of emotional turmoil and intimate connection as Oh My Sun fill the air with rich harmonies and lush, wondrous sound.

It’s relaxing, it’s energizing, and it’s a fresh start for two artists who’ve been around the block a few times, and just want to have freedom and fun with what they’re making next.

Five pieces in the water
I’m reaching for something
that I’ve seen before

slow breathing comes easy
let’s make believe that I
can get you out of my head

that I can get you out of my head
It’s all easy
’til you find yourself on the floor

the sun comes up
and she’s asking for more

the full moon made me
cry and scream at your door

through the weather changes
me and you are the same as before

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “5 Pieces,” the debut single from brand new London-based band Oh My Sun. The duo of Carmody and Tal Janes describe their sound as “’70s inspired music for the apocalypse,” and their introduction to the world certainly stays true to that description, with warm folk rock instrumentation (reminiscent of America, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and even Donovan) surrounding Carmody’s sweet, gentle vocal melodies.

Active in the music industry for the past decade (and with the pedigree to show for it), Jessica Carmody Nathan – who performs mononymously as Carmody – is an English singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, in addition to releasing her own debut album Imperfect Constellations (2022) and various solo EPs over the years, has also collaborated with the likes of Tom Misch, Laura Misch, and Alfa Mist. A 2018 Atwood Magazine review of her song “Summer Rain” praised Carmody for delivering a “smooth, sultry, and slow [song] driven by the beating heart of beautifully vulnerable love.”

Meanwhile, Tal Janes is a London-born guitarist, producer, and composer; he has guest lectured at Leeds College of Music, composed and produced music for a variety of independent films, and his studio credits include work with artists such as Jordan Rakei, Alfa Mist, Waaju, Nubiyan Twist and many more.

Janes and Carmody first connected in 2022, and quickly bonded over their shared interests (both musical and otherwise). “We first met shortly after Carmody had just released her album Imperfect Constellations, and as we started writing together, it felt like a space for both of us to have fun without any preconceived ideas of what the music was going to be,” Oh My Sun tell Atwood Magazine. “It was only after we wrote three songs that we realised this was our new band.”

“5 Pieces” is the duo’s introduction to the world, and the first single off an upcoming full-length album due out next year. As the pair explain, this song sets the scene for who they are both as musicians and as storytellers, with lyrical inspiration drawing from astrology and symbolism, reflecting on effect of the moon on mood, and referencing the book, Turning: Lessons From Swimming In Berlin’s Lakes – a “true story about a woman who decides to swim in a different lake each week as part of her breakup healing process.”

“‘5 Pieces’ was the first song we wrote; as individuals we both naturally gravitate towards darker sounds, so it was really interesting to discover how bright and playful our combined writing was,” Oh My Sun share. “We also made a point of just writing with an acoustic guitar and pen and paper for a while, to get away from computers and to just be able to focus on the song itself and not the production of it.”

“Reflecting on Turning: Lessons From Swimming In Berlin’s Lakes, we spoke about the meditative nature of cold-water swimming and how it can take your mind away from loss, even if only momentarily,” they continue. “We ran with the idea of using cold-therapy as a cure for heartache, and we thought about the idea of throwing away five mementos into a lake as a symbol of letting go / moving on from a relationship.”

They express this sentiment directly in the song’s sunny, catchy, and cathartic chorus:

calling my folks in the dead of the night
something in me still thinks
they can make it right

crawled 40 miles just to stare at your place
I’ve done it once before
it’s the same old mistakes
counting the ways to let you go
they said that through the hurt we grow
so I’ll keep steady as my world changes
Five pieces in the water
I’m reaching for something
that I’ve seen before

slow breathing comes easy
let’s make believe
that I can get you out of my head…
