Pain often follows the unexpected paths we’re forced to navigate. Yet while it may be inevitable, it’s never insurmountable.

Mandy, Indiana reclaim a sense of power, turning volume and abrasion into a means of being heard, expressing no remorse for the intensity as they lean into the feeling of running through a dark tunnel toward light, healing, and personal expression. The Manchester–Berlin-based band achieved acclaim through the spark of their soundwaves, shaping oblivion into a transcendental experience with their 2023 debut, i’ve seen a way, which is as electronically riveting as it is cathartic, immersive, and conceptually ambient.

Active since 2020, Mandy, Indiana are made up of four members: Vocalist Valentine Cauldfield, guitarist and producer Scott Fair, synth player Simon Catling, and drummer Alex Macdougall. Their music pushes emotional boundaries, using dissonance to drive introspection and transformation. Their upcoming sophomore album URGH, set for release on February 6 via Sacred Bones, promises ten tracks exploring deeper themes and experimental sounds.

With their recently-released lead single, “Magazine,” they deliver a relentless, disruptive sound that vibrates with acute power – absorbed viscerally as it offers space for healing and self-assertion amid distorted frequencies. The track explores the solidarity of justice through artful, confrontational sound. In Cauldfield’s own reflection on the song, she states:

“‘Magazine’ is the expression of the frustration and deep-seated violence I felt while attempting to recover from being raped. Just like most victims of sexual assault, I will never get justice, and just like most perpetrators, my attacker will never be punished. My therapist encouraged me to channel my anger into something productive, so here it is: my primal, screaming call for retribution. It is the only way I will ever get to say to my rapist: You hurt me, so I’m going to hurt you.”

Cauldfield expresses in the lyrics a desire to run and catch up with someone, driven by a deserved hunger for justice, speaking simultaneously for herself and others with similar experiences. The French line “Tu peux courir,” which translates to “you can run,” pulls listeners into a space of unwavering healing that dissolves any sense of isolation in its wake. It marks a shift from pain to confidence in strength through resilience, regardless of the outcome.

Sonically, the song begins with low-end frequencies that reverberate and rattle the senses, thick kick drums, and synths that grind against one another, while its production rejuvenates the cardiovascular system, surging like an accelerated heartbeat. The entire track embodies the tension and electricity of angst, shaking every vertebra with its visceral call for justice.

Mandy, Indiana run toward hope, healing, and freedom through cathartic dissonance.

The journey toward healing can never be rushed, yet “Magazine” pushes forward with relentless energy, shaped from experiences navigated privately in the minds and emotions of those searching for comfort. Each beat lands like an exorcism, channeling determination toward justice and internalized freedom.
