If you’re at all familiar with Simon & Garfunkel, the very first line of Harry Styles’ “Carla’s Song” might just remind you of something:

There is a bridge
That leads to troubled waters

Not only is this a reference to Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” but the title “Carla’s Song” also nods to their track, “Kathy’s Song.”

These ‘60s folk references aren’t random moments of nostalgia – they point toward the story unfolding on the track and hint at why it stands out both sonically and lyrically.

After a four-year-long hiatus, British pop star Harry Styles recently returned to the limelight. His fourth studio album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. is filled with a restless and searching sentiment. Despite selling out stadiums, Styles found himself wondering why he makes music in the first place – what his purpose as a musician is, what he offers his listeners, and how to balance outside expectations with preserving genuine enjoyment of the process along the way. No doubt, those are big questions to ask.

But in his interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, he explained how they helped turn “Carla’s Song” into the “most important part of the record” for him – and it may well be the album’s most striking moment for listeners, too.

“Carla’s Song” opens softly, Styles’ intimate vocals echoing folk traditions more than stadium pop.

The tempo begins slow but gradually builds momentum – a sonic choice that reflects the song’s origin story. The track is named after Harry Styles’ friend Carla, who told him she had just recently discovered Paul Simon. While she wasn’t familiar with Simon & Garfunkel, Harry Styles has long cited the duo as a major influence, with records such as Bridge Over Troubled Water soundtracking his adolescence. This is how he found himself showing Carla multiple Simon & Garfunkel songs for the first time – a moment that would be equally influential for both of them.

In his interview with Zane Lowe, he described the experience of watching her hear these songs for the very first time, feeling as though he was “watching someone see in technicolor or discover magic.” The music follows the same emotional trajectory:

From your head to your toes
Saw the light in the gold
that you discovered
Through your eyes, in awe
Melodies like the tide

This sense of discovery isn’t just lyrical. During the chorus, the instrumentation opens up, abandoning its initial intimacy as the arrangement widens while mirroring the song’s theme of discovery.

‘Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.’ Is Harry Styles’ Most Confident Album Yet

:: ALBUM REVIEW ::

Still in search of his purpose as a musician, “Carla’s Song” is the album’s full circle moment, where Styles eventually finds answers to the grand questions that shaped the album up to this point.

The experience of introducing a loved one to music that he loves himself reminded Styles what he is truly “investing in” by making music: “There was a time when you heard a song for the first time that made you want to touch music in some way.” His perspective shifted, as he realized: “Making music is just adding something to this world of things that is waiting for people to discover,” adding that this “is the point, that is what the joy is.” The simple possibility that someone might hear his music and keep it in their life forever became purpose enough.

But the song’s meaning expands beyond artistic purpose. It’s the sense of wonder with which he views Carla’s unknowingness that makes the song linger:

If you know, then you know
If you don’t, then you don’t
That’s heavenly

You’ve been a baby
Sleeping upon a candy bar

Styles is illustrating the sweetness of unexplored territory.

In the case of music, there’s an endless collection of vinyl records, CDs, sheets of music, or the daunting infinite scroll on streaming services to explore. An ocean of possibility always at hand, waiting to be uncovered. And all along, it is the sense that there is nothing wrong with this unknowingness that persists – in fact, this is the beautiful and wondrous part. What’s better than to introduce your loved ones to music that has been meaningful in your own life?

“Carla’s Song“ tells exactly this story and resonates because it offers a hopeful outlook on life. The listener is left with the promise of possibility, as the lush instrumentation of the track reaches its peak during the post-chorus at the end, when the gradual sonic expansion eventually pays off. The steady drums feel reassuring and ultimately swell into a climax, as Styles repeats over and over again:

I know what you like,
I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like,
you can hear it anytime
It’s all waiting there for you
