One song can change your life.
It all begins with a hook and a vibe.
It might even have an infinite gesture.
Years ago, a close friend of mine told me that if you are hooked on a song, you should play it ad infinitum because you need to benefit from what that song is providing to your life and the impact it has on how you think about yourself and the world. The traces of that song will bear fruit in ways that are perhaps not imagined or even conscious. That experience will impact you for the rest of your life, but the intense moment of a song is fleeting. We are ephemeral.
Music has power.
It has the power to change how we think and experience ourselves, each other, and the world.
Music enabled me to find a place of acceptance in a city and existential place where I felt alienated.
Music enabled me to find friendship and love.
Music has provided me with ways to think radically about the world.
Today, that song is U2’s “The Greatest Show on Earth,” released on 15 October 2026 as the newest single from their forthcoming LP Carnaval de Luz, due for release on 13 November 2026.

There are rare occasions when a song floors you and makes you feel goosebumps, taking your breath away and captivating your conscious life as it makes you rethink how you feel the experience of being human and alive in this very moment.
There was that hook, and then the vibe.
It was U2 inscribing themselves as a band that still mattered.
In “The Greatest Show on Earth,” U2 have astoundingly rolled back the mortal years in providing us with one of the most transcendent songs of this millennium and perhaps of their career. It is there in its subtle introduction, its gravitas, and the delicate way it unfolds before fully confronting our consciousness and who we are.

A song as an opera simultaneously explores three different levels by reflecting on romantic love, artistic expression, and faith – and ultimately what remains when the show is over and these dynamics have been tainted:
“If this is love and love is all we’ve got
You can show me what it is
I can show you what it’s not
If this is love, we make cathedrals of our hurt
People digging their dreams out of the dirt
We were once the greatest show on earth”
It is a song that reveals us in our broken state, a song that dreams of love. A song that encapsulates our beauty, frailty, and vulnerability. A song that ranges across the tempests of ourselves in this world. One song that can reclaim our faith in humanity.
Bono and U2 have expressed that they have been in the wilderness years amidst these tumultuous social and political times. Their Days of Ash EP was a response to those conditions, while the Easter Lily EP provided forms of rejuvenation. Now, it is clear that they want to provide us with the utmost celebratory form of how we can overcome and possibly be the most brilliant version of ourselves, which is being so poignantly celebrated in their new single “The Greatest Show on Earth” from their forthcoming LP Carnaval de Luz.
Yet at the same time, this song poses an immense challenge to humanity. It is up to all of us to carry this challenge forward and forge the sentiments of this song deep into our daily lives. “It’s a beautiful night somewhere,” but we also need to create it.

In this song, we are witnessing the remarkable power of art and creativity, with U2 attaining new heights in their artistic journey.
In this space and time, they are also extending the limits of how we can feel the depths of our own existence. It is their own infinite gesture.
U2’s “The Greatest Show on Earth” is perhaps the greatest song and video that they have done in thirty years. Sometimes it takes decades to capture that certain transcendent magic that made a song like “Where the Streets Have No Name” entirely unforgettable. For me, I think they got the title right, as this might well be one of the greatest songs that they have ever conceptualized.
