“Don’t Feel Like Crying” – Sigrid

In preparation for her eagerly anticipated album due on 8th March, Sigrid recently unveiled yet another fresh sounding pop relic with the release of her January 2019 single “Don´t Feel Like Crying.” Though she has yet to release a debut album, Sigrid has managed to establish herself as one of the most promising artists in the current music scene.

“Don’t Feel Like Crying” is another example of the straight to the point lyrical simplicity that characterizes Sigrid’s songwriting. Her lyrics, which avoid overly complicated metaphors and obsolete terms, do not compromise the quality of her craft, but contribute to it instead, making her tracks comforting and relatable.

In “Don’t Feel Like Crying,” Sigrid takes an optimistic approach at a not-so-enjoyable situation: heartbreak. From the anthemic, synthy, bright instrumental intro, we would never be able to predict the song’s topic. She reflects the most mundane aspect of a heartbreak, painting the scene in a conversational manner:

I know I should be ordering takeout
Sitting on my couch, that’s what you do
I know I should be all in my feelings
Staring at the ceiling, but here’s the truth

However, she doesn’t dwell in that feeling; she quickly progresses into a positive approach through simple reasoning; there is no point in wallowing in it. What’s happened has happened, and weeping and mourning are of no use.

Wallowing in it would be such a waste
That isn’t gonna fix it anyway

In just a first verse and a pre-chorus, Sigrid builds herself a shield and an armour, and is moving on. The lyrically succinct, hooky chorus is a restatement of Sigrid’s signature positive outlook at unpleasant situations like heartbreak:

I dry my eyes ’cause I don’t feel like crying

Sigrid boldly reassures herself that, regardless of the situation, she’s going to be alright; tonight, she makes the choice to be just fine. The song finally develops into a punchy bridge, where for the first time in the song she embraces her vulnerability, admitting that the pain of the heartbreak is somehow hidden, but still present.

It hasn’t hit me yet,
And I know if I go home
I’m gonna get upset

In “Don’t Feel Like Crying,” Sigrid brazenly turns around the traditional idea of heartbreak and makes it into an infectious bop. If there were to be a playlist about broken hearts, Sigrid’s song would definitely stick out for its freshness, unusual positivity, and crisp take on such topic.

“Don’t Feel Like Crying” is another taste of what is yet to come from Sigrid, who has once more stayed true to her nonchalant personality, infectious melodies, and upbeat sound. Her debut album Sucker Punch releases March 8, 2019.
