I can still feel you here, home…

You can take a person out of their home, but you can’t take the home out of a person! Our experiences shape us; our environment molds us. No matter how much we grow and change, we owe a great deal of our individual identities to our roots: To the people and places we called home along the way. Singer/songwriter Allman Brown captures the spirit and energy of “Home” in his impassioned new single, a lively embrace full of love, connection, and cheerful nostalgia.

Home – Allman Brown
Every corner of this place,
is special in some way
I can almost hear your voice
Echo down the halls
when I am still, s
o still
Time heavy around me
The pictures on the walls,
never change at all
The stairs still creak
Our names are on the bedroom doors
Doors, in fading black paint

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Home,” the latest single off Allman Brown’s upcoming sophomore album, Darling, It’ll Be Alright (out May 10th, 2019). Following singles “Shapes in the Sun” and “Lonely Hearts, Los Angeles,” “Home” serves an important purpose as the new record’s opening track: It is a listener’s first glimpse of the music to come, as well as a bridge between the Allman Browns of the past and the present.

When Brown’s debut album 1000 Years released in 2017, he was just emerging as a force of reckoning: In premiering the album’s single “Sweetest Thing,” Atwood Magazine praised the artist’s ability to craft “inimitably catchy” melodies full of soulful, heartfelt sentiment. “Allman Brown stops us dead in our tracks with his little vocal riff, cascading upwards with a blissful fire,” we wrote at the time, naming Brown one of the magazine’s 2017 Artists to Watch in the process. ““Sweetest Thing” is delicate and expressive, like a love note written on the petals of a flower. Brown finds balance between life and love, capturing a moment in its full flavor – sight, smells, taste, and all. At the end, “Sweetest Thing” truly is something sweet.” “Sweetest Thing” has since gone on to be Brown’s most successful single to date, amassing 40 million Spotify streams worldwide.

“Home” carries with it the intimate sincerity Brown established in his debut, while presenting him in a brighter, energized environment. The music is upbeat and cheery in spite of its raw lyrical nostalgia: Brown’s illustration of the home comes off as a loving embrace, rather than a wistful musing, thanks to his instrumental builds and lilting melodies.

“Home” finds strong footing in a chorus full of inner strength and security:

Take me home
Home, where I belong
I can still feel you here
Home… Home…
Where I’m strong
I can still feel you here
Home… Home…
All those years kept
in the wood and stone

“In all honesty, I wanted a song people could sing, shout, and run to,” Brown tells Atwood Magazine. “I wanted this album to be more joyous and upbeat. This came about from my own life being happier and from playing live with my band. It’s just fun to play songs where you cut loose in an unabashed way.”

“Home” is special in that it just like a home itself, the song can mean different things for different people. Perhaps it’s a remembrance: Appreciation for a loved one who’s no longer with us. Perhaps it’s more introspective and individual: Focused on your own stability and sense of self. Maybe it’s something else, altogether. With “Home,” Brown provides a blueprint for comfort and stability that we can each make our very own. Few songs are so impactful that they can plunge us into old memories, and bring us back to our happy place.

No matter where we go,
even though we’re grown
We’re children again
When we set foot in the place
The place
Where we began

“HOME” WITH ALLMAN BROWN

Atwood Magazine: Allman, what is the significance of Darling, It'll Be Alright for you, and how do you feel it branches out from 1000 Years?

Allman Brown: Put simply, I think this album is better. I feel more confident in my  songwriting abilities and less unsure of myself. It is more coherent sonically and thematically than 1000 Years, which was more scattershot.

How have you grown over the past few years since your debut album?

Brown: I’ve played live shows all over the world with and without my band, signed a publishing deal with Universal, a label services deal with The Orchard and most importantly I became a father, which is genuinely the most wonderful thing.

You've released a few songs so far off this album. What do these singles mean to you?

Brown: These singles will hopefully give my audience a little cross-section of the album. There is a taste of what they’ve come to love in my music and also some new ingredients. Mostly, I hope it shows the range and timbre of the new album and that sonically, things have gotten a little bigger and bolder.

You've mentioned previously how the song “Shapes in the Sun” was the touchstone for this album. Why is that?

Brown: “Shapes In The Sun” is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written. Lyrically it’s about more than just my own feelings – it’s a meditation of wider themes of humanity, the cosmos and death. Along with all that grandiose stuff,it has a distinct vibe. It just gave me confidence in the rest of the tracks. I would plug into the song and charge up every time I was feeling shaky or unsure of things. I wanted all the songs to sit alongside it. On the production side, the electric guitar sound pops up in many other tracks, and the final edit showed me I could go big whilst holding on to the intimate side of things also.

I would plug into the song and charge up every time I was feeling shaky or unsure of things.

“Home” is such a special song on this record. What role does this song play in Darling, It'll Be Alright?

Brown: Thank you. In all honesty I wanted a song people could sing, shout, and run to. I wanted this album to be more joyous and upbeat. This came about from my own life being happier and from playing live with my band. It’s just fun to play songs where you cut loose in an unabashed way. I still have the softer, slower songs here like “Natasha” and “Hurting” but “Home” is the first track on the album and lets you know this is a more energetic experience overall than 1000 Years.

How does “Home” capture 2019's Allman Brown?

Brown: Hopefully it shows that I’m more mindful, more able, finding it easier to feel happiness and still alive after Thanos ashed out half the known universe! ?

With the album coming out soon, how do you hope it impacts listeners?

Brown: I hope people find some comfort, some joy, something new and then give me a big bunch of cash as a thank you, haha! Most of all, I want to contribute to some good vibes out there in the world because we really need those right now and to remind people there is more than just negativity in life. I’m not burying my head in the sand but I think we need focus on the positive if we want to solve some of the problems that are facing us all.
