How can you tell if someone is being true to you or if they’re just telling you what you want to hear? How can you tell if someone loves you or if you’re just convenient for them? How can you really tell if someone is being honest with you, through and through? The bad news, you can’t. The good news, with age and a lot of lessons learned, you get better at pointing out the genuine from the not-so-genuine. Like everything in life, it takes getting burnt a few times to not let it happen again. Brynn Cartelli sings about this so impressively effortless with new pop-anthem, “Gemini.”
Cartelli got her start as the youngest winner in history of NBC’s The Voice and has since grown into an impressive songwriter in her own right. Following her poignant and stellar debut EP, Based on a True Story (May 2021), Cartelli is ready to start the next chapter with “Gemini.”
Released May 20, 2022 via Elektra Records, “Gemini” is the singer/songwriter’s first release of the year and her first follow-up to last year’s EP. Per Cartelli, the song was sonically inspired by Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch, whilst lyrically, “it plays into the “two-faced” duality stereotype often associated with the Gemini astrological sign.”
“The song ‘Gemini’ started off as a joke,” Cartelli tells Atwood Magazine. “I thought it would be funny to play into the dual-natured stereotype in a song; then I went to London and finished it. I wanted to lean into inspirations of women that inspired me since I was young, like Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch, but in my own pop sphere. I am so excited about how different ‘Gemini’ is than any of the songs on my first project [Based on a True Story]. I’m leaning into the witchy energy of the East Coast and am scaring Geminis everywhere, which you can also see in the music video that I directed myself.”
The song starts off with high energy as Cartelli harmonizes the word Gemini with dreamy instrumentals accompanying. The intro breaks as Cartelli’s vocals cut through. A guitar lick and drumbeat continue the energy as she sings,
must be your freckles and your eyes
they bring me back in time
I don’t know why I cant let go
you know just how to get to me
you think you’re talking sweet
your tongue in cheek I cant say no
The control in Cartelli’s voice is mesmerizing as she leads into the chorus that explodes,
I’ve had bad luck with boys i’ve tried to love
who were born in may june or july
If i know he’s a gemini
i’m scared that he might have another side
i’ve had enough of giving all my love
to a boy that’s got something to hide
i’m falling for a gemini
i dont know why i do this every time
i’m falling for a
gemini-ni
gemini-ni-ni
i’m falling for a
gemini-ni
gemini-ni-ni
The song softens again for the second verse allowing Cartelli’s vocals continue to shine,
this happens time and time again
know how this story ends
we’re never friends
the bridges burn
i know its not a consequence
its not just in my head
i’m at the point
of no return
The intricacies of the harmonizations and runs Cartelli effortlessly weaves throughout the lines of the song provide a lasting impact as she sings:
It’s in the stars in the sky
i don’t know why
i could never fall for your pretty lies
its in the stars in the sky
i don’t know why
i could never kiss you and call you mine
it’s in the stars in the sky
i dont know why
i dont know why
i could never ever be with a
The song closes as it began, with Cartelli harmonizing the title leading us on to the next track.
gemini-ni gemini-ni-ni
gemini-ni gemini-ni-ni
A wonderful song, neatly tied up through the metaphor of astrological signs that are most of the time, eerily true to the human. We look forward to watching Cartelli grow and seeing what she does next!
