Certain songs have that special IT factor – an indescribable, yet wholly present quality that lifts them well beyond the audio realm. Dive Index’s new single is a standout example of such music in action: An immersive, transformative listening experience, the intimate “Window to Window” ft. Natalie Walker offers an arresting minimalist journey through transience and movement: Life’s lost moments and missed opportunities.

Window to Window – Dive Index
My balance is tricky in flickering light
Slowly pulling into this place
a new place, a new face
Window to window
You’re so close, so close
This is how it’s supposed to work
You’re moving forward, I’m in reverse

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Window to Window,” the somber lead single off Dive Index’s forthcoming fifth album Waving at Airplanes (out May 29, 2020 via Neutral Music). The collaborative musical project of Los Angeles-based electronic composer/producer Will Thomas, Dive Index has been active for well over a decade – he released his debut Mid/Air in 2008 – and he’s been collaborating with artists like Natalie Walker (of trip-hop collective Daughter Darling) for just as long.

Featuring song collaborations with both Walker and critically-acclaimed English multi-instrumentalist Merz, Waving at Airplanes bases much of its ethereal sonic work off modular synthesizer – a multifaceted vessel that transforms every musical moment into a surreal musical and emotional adventure.

Sitting motionless
You’ve got my attention
Go ahead and stare as long as you want
There’s a million things that never will happen
With our fragile egos
It’ll never last, never last
Instant karma
We don’t know, we don’t know
That’s how it used to work
You’re moving forward, I’m in reverse

“Window to Window” is perhaps Dive Index’s most grounded offering off the forthcoming record, and as such it’s only fitting that this hauntingly beautiful song would be both the album’s opening track and lead single.

“‘Window to Window’ is about a missed connection – two kindred spirits who came within close proximity, saw a glimpse of each other, and then were carried away before they could connect,” Will Thomas tells Atwood Magazine. “The song came together very quickly as Natalie began weaving sombre melodies through the piano chords. The lyrical sentiment worked really nicely with the melancholic sound of the music and soon after we recorded the vocal, Natalie and I sat back and thought – Wow that’s a pretty heartbreaking story.”

Sitting motionless
You’ve have my attention
Go ahead and stare as long as you want
Sitting motionless
You’ve got my attention
Go ahead and stare as long as you can
My balance is tricky
In flickering light
Slowly pulling away
Window to window
You’re so close, so close
You’re moving forward

A head-swivel, a passing glance – and it all fades to black. Together, Dive Index and Natalie Walker evoke a stunning melancholy in life’s what-ifs – all the people we’ll never meet; the places we’ll never go; the things we’ll never learn; the lives that will never be lived. Propelled by Walker’s evocative, raw vocals and Thomas’ acute, expressive instrumentation, “Window to Window” is a stark, powerful marriage of serenity and urgency. Delicate and provocative, it leads us into the unknown and leaves us there to think – giving us the space to breathe, as well as the tools to find our way back home.

We’ve all had one such fleeting chance encounter, whether we know it or not; our paths have each been shaped by hundreds, if not thousands of them. Whether or not you believe in fate, “Window to Window” opens our minds to the sundry routes that lie before us every single day. We’ll only end up going down one road in the end, but the weight of the options alone can easily feel overwhelming. “Window to Window” sheds its melancholic light on this singular notion, delivering a transformative experience in its deep musical folds.
