On the surface, Floral Couches’ latest single is such a simple question – and yet, its emotional depth feels limitless.

Where’d you go?” Cody Gray asks into the ether; into that haze of unknowable truths lying beyond the physical realm. Death, no matter whose it is, tends to get us thinking about what it means to be alive, and what happens next. Floral Couches dwells in a space of loss and longing in “Where’d You Go,” an achingly tender embrace of warm psych- and soul-soaked bedroom pop.

Hey baby bird
I hear you whistling
But you’re not singing at all no more
I still hear it
I’m missing your songs tonight
But you’re gone, now we’re in it
Where’d you go? All alone

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Where’d You Go?,” the third single taken off Floral Couches’ forthcoming album Xtra Mild (out April 2024 via his own label, Floral Records). Following recent singles “Heaven Is Home (with you)” and the very relatable “Anxious on Vacation” – both of which meld strong jazz elements and R&B influences together with pop sensibilities – “Where’d You Go?” is a moody, brooding, two and a half minutes of pure, poignant heartache.

“I wrote this song while processing the loss of our first dog, Percy,” Cody Gray, the singer and songwriter behind Floral Couches, tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s a song about struggling with moving forward and missing what once was. The massive flute outro was performed by my mother-in-law, which made this song extra special.”

The cold
Tells the trees to let go of their leaves
But I won’t, I won’t, and it feels
Like you just have so much time
‘Til you don’t

Lush, spacious keyboards fill the ears with an atmospheric heat as “Where’d You Go?” ebbs and flows, intimate emotions reverberating alongside gentle drums and noodling guitar licks and riffs. Gray’s voice is soft; he sings hot on the mic, up close and personal, like he’s whispering sweet nothings into his late companion’s ear. It’s a touching scene, and one that has a way of reminding listeners of our own lost loved ones – not in a sorrowful way, but rather, with a bittersweetness that speaks to the light they once shined onto our lives.

Our time with our pets may be limited, but Floral Couches cherishes, honors, and embraces that special bond in his latest single.

We, too, are left yearning for answers as to where we go, and with the lingering hope that, wherever our loved ones – pets or people – may be, that they’re not alone.
