As far as most storms go, fucales’ is one most of us wouldn’t mind basking in.

The Nordic band’s latest tempest is warm and welcoming: A sweltering, sweaty deluge of guitars and drums that engulfs the ears, drowning the soul in a heavy alternative sound that, contrary to what one might think, uplifts and enthralls its listeners (rather than bringing them down). And in the center of that tender turbulence, glowing like a beacon in the night, lies Mari Singstad’s radiant voice – intimate, emotive, and impassioned.

Let the clouds come, let the winds blow: With fucales for our soundtrack, we can weather the worst. The Norwegian band immerse and enthrall on their soul-stirring new single “It Was Decided,” a dreamy, dramatic, and enchanting alt-rock reverie soaked in soaring psychedelia.

It Was Decided – fucales
We met on the Caledonian Canal
Waves were high that night
In spite of wrongdoings done right
We follow shallow streams filled with seashells
There you were
It was decided
We were glue as of that moment

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “It Was Decided,” out April 26, 2024 via EDDA Music. Following last October’s Norwegian Seaweed Society, Pt. I-II – a six-track combination of two EPs, and a must listen for fans of heavy, jazzy, driving alternative – fucales’ first single of the year finds the band in a tamer, but no less volatile space. Think the eye of a storm: Things can whip up at any moment, and you’re constantly on edge, but the moment is serene and pleasant – even tranquil.

Such is the magic and wonder of fucales that they can make their music at once electrifying and soothing: Comprised of Mari Singstad (bass and vocals), Leon Torskangerpoll (guitar and vocals), Simon Stenersen (vocal and trumpet), and Mikkel Maltasar (drums), the Bergen, Norway natives – all currently between the ages of 17 and 21 – introduced their band four years ago, and have already established themselves as one of their country’s most explosive live indie acts.

Headfirst, hijack my prophecy
Let’s dive deep into hypocrisy
We’ll hold on tight, even when it isn’t right
Hate and love intertwined
There you were
It was decided
We were glue
As of that moment

A five-minute fever dream, “It Was Decided” is sure to bring forth fucales’ fire and fury.

With its smoldering sonic palette and lush psychedelic elements, the song could easily be transformed into a breathtaking 10-15 minute barnburner (and this writer, for one, would welcome it).

“In June 2023, we packed the car full of equipment and set off for Mari’s grandparents’ cabin,” the band tells Atwood Magazine. “There we rigged up in the skein with the sea, and let the creative calm sink in. The first phrase in the song, ‘We met on the Caledonian Canal,’ comes from a souvenir coffee cup from the aforementioned grandparents’ canal cruise sometime in the 1980s.”

“With the first phrase in the box, we jammed out the song, in true fucales style. The outro melody became our anthem for the trip, and the song itself already evokes nostalgic feelings in us.”

Dadidi dada, ahah…
It was decided
Dadidi dada, ahah
As of that moment
Dadidi dada, ahah
It was decided
Dadidi dada, ahah
We were glue, ooh
I’ve never grown
Don’t know what to tell you
Now that we’re older
I realize my life was foretold
Dadidi dada, ahah…

From softer silences to raging roars, “It Was Decided” is a sweltering, spellbinding tour de force – and a fantastic introduction to those just discovering fucales today.
