Stream: “Weight” – lostboy

We all carry our own weight in varying capacities. The song was inspired by the wish to leave any weight I carry behind.

There’s nothing quite like a massive stadium-sized anthem to facilitate our unburdening and emotional release, especially in periods of tension and uncertainty. Music may not be a panacea or cure-all, but certain songs have that it factor that can set your spirit free, if only for a few minutes – and sometimes, that’s all you need to get through a tough day or challenging moment. A soaring, high energy outpouring of fiery passion and cinematic verve, lostboy’s new single “Weight” is a massive, catchy and cathartic anthem ready to rock our souls in all the right ways.

Weight - lostboy
Weight – lostboy
Maybe she ain’t right for me
But my god she’s keen
And she treats me well
Don’t be hanging on to me
I’m off down stream
I wish you well
But when you call me
You can bet I’ll come round

Independently released January 27, 2022, “Weight” is lostboy’s first single of the year and the artist’s first offering since releasing their debut EP Bad News last June. The brainchild of Sheffield, UK-based singer/songwriter Max Clutterbuck alongside Jack Berry (lead guitar), Henry Robinson (bass) and Ethan Reeves (drums), lostboy’s music is bold, dynamic, honest, and unapologetic – driven by captivating melodies, surging beats, roaring guitars, and clever, easily memorable lyrics full of depth and thoughtful consideration.

“Weight” is an especially powerful release from the up-and-coming artist. Reminiscent of such acclaimed bands as The Killers, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and The 1975, lostboy’s latest is a dramatic overhaul of feverish energy: A reckoning played out in cataclysmic sonic blasts that radiate raw fervor. “Weight” is hungry for release, and boy does it find some: lostboy comes to a fever pitch in the song’s chorus:

Maybe
“These conservations keep on happening”
She leaves
Then comes back when she thinking bout
“The weight of the world
On these boys and these girls
Is unbelievable”

Maybe
You know that you’ll leave
And “tell your friends you’re clean
And you’re doing well”
Don’t be
Hanging onto me
“I’m of downstream
I wish you well”
But “when you call me
You can bet that I’ll come round”

“We live at a time in which it’s all too clear to everyone that things need to change,” lostboy tells Atwood Magazine. “Whether it’s me, loved ones, my band mates or my friends; we all have a shared worry in different capacities. Worry for the world and how we treat it, worry for our loved ones during a global pandemic. Worry for overpopulation; worry for what this year may hold; what of the year after that? To name a few. I can only imagine that, for the young people trying to grow during this time, that weight must be immense. We all carry our own weight in varying capacities. The song was inspired by the wish to leave any weight I carry behind heading into this new year.”

The past few years have been especially heavy to bear, but life wasn’t necessarily hunky dory for everyone beforehand, and it still won’t be even after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides – if and when it ever does. “Weight” speaks to life’s very real heft; our everyday pressures, stresses, strains, worries, troubles, griefs, and more. This song isn’t a solution, but it does serve as a reminder that everyone’s going through something: That we’re all ultimately in this life together, as cliché and worn as that phrase may be. “The weight of these girls on these boys and these girls, it’s unbelievable.” Damn right it is – and we’re going to sing it all out at the top of our lungs.

Maybe
These conservations keep on happening
She leaves
Then comes back when she thinking bout
The weight of the world
On these boys and these girls
Is unbelievable
It’s unbelievable
