It’s about challenging our inner binary beliefs and breaking the caging patterns of stereotypes that wound our souls.

Inspiring and empowering, Lùisa’s impassioned new single is a dynamic and bold anthem of womanhood, equality, and change: As catchy as it is emphatic, “New Woman” is an unapologetic assertion of self-worth, self-confidence, and self-respect shining a light on the pervasive and shameful gender inequality that proliferates the music industry to this day.

New Woman – Lùisa
And I’m moving in the desert nights
And I’m climbing high, could have fallen twice
but all inside of me is moving towards the light

I feel like a new woman
And I’m moving on, leave the past behind
raised underground for the longest time
all inside of me aims to cross the lines
I feel like a new Woman

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “New Woman,” the latest single and title track off Lùisa’s forthcoming third album, New Woman (set for release May 7, 2021 via Nettwerk Music Group). Following her recent 2020 singles “Deep Sea State of Mind,” “Late Summer Day,” and  “To Let You Go” (released between September and December), “New Woman” arrives alongside Lùisa’s official album announcement.

Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Lùisa has been actively releasing music for the better part of the past decade, starting with her debut album One Youth Ago in 2013. The producer, guitarist, songwriter, and singer signed with Nettwerk to release her 2015 sophomore LP Never Own, and while it’s been a long six years since her last full-length release, Lùisa’s growth and artistic maturity are immediately apparent in her new material, whose social activism, grief, and resolve resonate through visceral pop of the highest order.

Lùisa’s three 2020 releases carry their own magnetic energies, but she shines with a uniquely stirring, special light on “New Woman” – a perfectly timed January release. Each and every new year heralds a time of reflection and change, but few have carried as much weight and urgency as January 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage throughout the world, Lùisa finds herself consumed with an illness that has been far more pervasive and long-lasting than the coronavirus: That of gender inequality. With the new year and its mindset now firmly upon us, the artist calls on each and every one of us to do our part in making the world a more equitable place for all:

Change
Breaking My Cage
Making Mistakes
Taking my Stage
Feel like a New Woman today
Change
Breaking My Cage
Making Mistakes
Taking my Stage
Feel like a New Woman today

“New Woman” is made all the more powerful by its personal import and impact: Lùisa owns a revolutionary energy as she commands the spotlight, her words as personal as they are universal in ushering in a spirit of optimism and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

“New Woman’ is my anthem for empowerment and change,” the artist tells Atwood Magazine. “The song is about fighting the rules of patriarchy and taking the stage for equality. It’s about challenging our inner binary beliefs and breaking the caging patterns of stereotypes that wound our souls. I discovered the movements of intersectional feminism as highly relevant in my own life – they gave me strength and inspired me for solidarity. I’ve had many tiring experiences with sexism and the disadvantages that go with working as a female artist in a still male-dominated music industry. And I know so many women still experience greater inequality and gender hierarchy every day. We need to push for change! I hope this ’70s-inspired disco song brings joy, hope, and empowerment when you need it the most.”

And I’m moving on
Hear the doubts inside
the seasons fading in and out time after time
they say I’m like the moon I let them know I am the sun
I feel like a new woman
And I’m moving on in the desert nights
Find equal times at the dawn of light
See you have to trust the dark to see what comes to light
I feel like a new woman
They talk they explain
they bear their teeth again
they stare
beast of prey
I am not afraid
hear me shouting

Directed by Ivan Boljat and produced by Hannah Toni Trüb, the “New Woman” music video is an expressive and colorful embrace of the song’s “mission statement,” as it were. The artist and six other women are depicted in various attires – from dress to business, casual to formal – all owning their bodies, their image, and their identities. By the video’s end, there’s a sense of broken barriers at play; that what we’ve witnessed is truly a rejection of traditional standards and expectations. “New Woman” subverts the norm, and in doing so asserts a new dawn for us all.

The title track off her forthcoming third album, “New Woman” is an especially meaningful song that showcases all there is to love about Lùisa’s artistry.

Out later this year, New Woman is a multifaceted record that finds the artist not only tackling women’s rights and the act of finding your voice and speaking up, but also dealing with deeper issues of grief, loss, inner and external pain, and trauma. New Woman is most certainly a record to get excited about, and Lùisa has done more than enough to establish herself as a 2021 artist to watch.

New Woman is out May 7, 2021 via Nettwerk Music Group. For now, stream Lùisa’s empowering song “New Woman,” an invigorating and enchanting outpouring of self-expression and self-love, exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
