For a decade, Mad Cool Festival has continued to set the precedent for event organization and execution and 2026 was the culmination of those successes. From stellar musical performances, to world class culinary and immersive guest experiences and a FIFA World Cup victory thrown in for good measure, it was one for the ages.

Not many European festivals have grown as rapidly as Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival.

Celebrating its 10^th anniversary, the 2026 edition wasn’t simply another weekend of concerts; it was a statement about how far the festival has come. Over four days, Mad Cool turned Madrid into one of the world’s premier live music destinations, bringing together legendary rock acts, pop superstars, indie favorites and thousands of fans from all over the globe.

Logistically, the anniversary edition benefited from several thoughtful improvements to the infrastructure. A redesigned layout, improved shade and hydration stations, improved stage visibility, and enhanced transportation options made navigating the sprawling venue noticeably easier despite Madrid’s intense July heat. The organizers clearly listened to feedback from previous years, and it showed throughout the weekend.

Musically, the lineup was among the strongest in the festival’s history.

Foo Fighters opened the celebration with the kind of explosive, arena-rock performance that reminded everyone why they remain one of rock’s defining live bands. Their set balanced decades of classics with newer material, delivering an emotional and high-energy kickoff to the four days.

Wolf Alice embraced the sweltering Wednesday afternoon heat in one of the best performances of the weekend in their triumphant return to the Mad Cool stage. I would liken lead vocalist/guitarist Ellie Rowsell’s presence as not unlike Florence Welch, but with a more rock-laiden dominance.

The second day was absolutely dominated by impactful female artists like headliner Florence + The Machine, whose soaring vocals and theatrical stage presence turned the main stage into a communal celebration. Florence Welch once again proved herself one of modern music’s most captivating performers, while Lorde delivered one of the weekend’s most anticipated sets, pairing polished production with an intimate connection to the audience.

Jennie continued her successful solo run with a performance that showcased both charisma and star power, drawing one of the festival’s largest and most enthusiastic crowds. She manages to corral a wild energy into finely-tuned choreography and masterful stage presence. She has also managed to cultivate an audience that while still very young as a result of her Blackpink origin story, is now peppered with all ages and has arguably reintroduced many to the pop genre.

CMAT was another Thursday bright spot and her devoted crowd could have still easily packed the main stage area, but they didn’t let being relegated to the Orange stage hinder their enthusiasm. Her irreverent onstage antics had fans dancing, laughing and cheering the whole set. I would describe it as adorably-lewd and charmingly-lascivious. It was one of those daytime sets that you know is on the verge of being a pre-headlining artist.

Not to be outdone by the ladies, Teddy Swims also brought a soulful, fun performance on Thursday that provided many sing-along opportunities and the crowd answered the bell time and time again. With maybe the most playful stage production of the weekend, his set includes steel girders, appliances and even a full living room set for backup singers to lounge intermittently. It could be said he’s one of those artists you can’t help but love, with this soul-laiden voice and stout physical presence. He’d be your childhood Teddy bear if the Teddy bear had neck tattoos.

Friday offered one of the festival’s most unforgettable moments – not just because of the music, but because of what was happening beyond the stages.

As Spain faced Belgium in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, Mad Cool embraced the moment rather than competing with it. Giant screens throughout the festival grounds allowed fans to watch the match before returning to the music, creating an atmosphere unlike any typical festival experience. Every Spanish goal sparked celebrations that echoed across the venue, and when Spain secured its victory, the excitement seamlessly spilled back into the concerts. It became a uniquely Spanish festival memory, where fútbol and live music complemented rather than overshadowed one another.

That emotional energy carried directly into standout performances from Kings of Leon, whose anthemic rock found an audience already in full celebration mode. Halsey delivered one of the festival’s boldest performances, leaning into her increasingly rock-oriented sound with intensity and confidence.

Headliners Twenty One Pilots reminded everyone why they’re considered one of the best live acts of their generation. Their production, acrobatics and audience interaction, fireworks, and seemingly endless energy turned the final set into one of Mad Cool’s defining performances. Columbus, OH natives Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun may now be married with their own children, but that maturity hasn’t slowed them from delivering over and over again to live audiences. Their likability is (if anything) even greater than the first time I saw them play in 2013 to a rabid festival crowd in a 1pm time slot on a very small stage.

Saturday maintained the momentum with another remarkably deep lineup. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds delivered what many attendees considered the artistic high point of the weekend, combining emotional weight with top tier musicianship. When they played “The Red Right Hand,” their prolific theme from the renowned series Peaky Blinders, there was almost a tangible chill that came over the hot Madrid evening air.

Fans should always come away from a festival blown away by at least one artist you may not have privy to for one reason or another and for me that had to be Kasabian. Lead vocalist Sergio Pizzorno doesn’t just play to a crowd. He stalks a crowd like they are a hunter’s prey and his trophy is their uncontrollable will to dance and hang on his every word. It’s also not surprising to hear he is a sub 4-hour marathon runner, because he must have put in 30,000 steps on Mad Cool’s Orange stage.

What ultimately made Mad Cool 2026 special wasn’t only its impressive lineup or improved organization – it was the sense of occasion.

The festival celebrated ten years by embracing everything that has made it one of Europe’s premier music festivals while creating moments that simply couldn’t have been scripted. Watching thousands of fans celebrate Spain’s World Cup victory before immediately singing along with Kings of Leon and then witnessing Twenty One Pilots close the night perfectly captured the unique spirit of this year’s edition.

Mad Cool has officially entered its second decade with confidence and panache. The 10^th anniversary festival honored its past while proving that its future remains just as exciting. Between unforgettable performances, thoughtful improvements, and the unforgettable backdrop of Spain’s World Cup triumph, Mad Cool Festival 2026 will be remembered as one of the defining events of the year and of its history.
