Listen: “The Cage” – Marie Naffah

Io live an unfettered life, even for just a moment, is a treat that truly cannot be compared to. Unburdened by life’s mundane tasks and tiring expectations can be a cathartic escape, one that can refuel the soul and brighten the coming days. This feeling has an attachment to the summer season, and Marie Naffah took it upon herself to free herself on “The Cage,” a single whose message is as liberating as the soundscapes surrounding it.

The Cage – Marie Naffah
Move if you want
Move if you want
From the cage
I’m not running for cover
but someone get me out of this place

‘The Cage’ is the invisible shell that sits around you like a tomb, stopping you from living as freely as you might like,” explains Naffah on the song. “It’s claustrophobic, oppressive, stifling, and poison. For me, my cage was London. Your cage could be anything – your job, your doubts, your fears or your mother’s expectations. This song invites you to dance out of it.” Moving vocals and stellar instrumentation make dancing a guarantee. It’s an anthem to lose one’s self to, and Naffah excels at bringing it to life.

We’ll shake at the bars
Till the bartenders pass
Our way
Serve up a half empty glass
With a cherry kinda garnish babe
Cos I don’t wanna find love
When I’ve lost control
I don’t wanna find myself
In a bunch of lost souls no
I don’t want no violins
I want a drum roll
So drive on love

Delicate plucks welcome listeners as Naffah’s sublime vocals enter the mix along with a steady drumbeat and funky bass line. No build-up necessary, the song immediately hits listeners with an air of coolness that is carried throughout its entirety. The track’s instrumentation leaves nothing wasted, providing each second with an inexplicable sonic presence that makes dancing and swaying an inevitability. It’s made clear from the get-go that anyone in need of an escape has found their answer with “The Cage.”

What truly elevates the track is Naffah herself. Her incantations are addicting – her deliveries simply nonpareil as she carries her colorful lyrics with such lush control. The soul she brings is powerful, and when it all comes together, a true treasure is created. On her lyrics, she seems to have a penchant for artistry. The images she paints with her words are visceral, delighting multiple senses in the process. But why stop there? To pack an even more delightful punch, though, the accompanying music video acts as the perfect complement.

Move if you want
Move if you want
From the fate
Is it heaven is it hell
We’ll play limbo in this cell
As we wait
It’s dark and it’s dear
And we’ll live with the fear
In our face
In a cell of wanderlovers
Trapped between the covers
Of haste

“No hair and make-up, no stage direction – just two pals on the road having some fun with it.” Filmed by Holly Morrison, the video captures the journey of her and Naffah as they trek across America’s west coast, exploring forestry, open roads, and the beaches along the way. It’s Naffah’s goal made real; a freeing visual that encapsulates and promotes the act of liberating one’s self from whatever entity may be shackling them – even for just one moment.

So if you’re driving down the highway
And the wingmirror is hell behind you
Roll your windows down to full
And let the heat of the moment ignite you
Cos I don’t wanna find love
When I’ve lost control
I don’t wanna find myself
In a bunch of lost souls no
I don’t want no violins
I want a drum roll
So drive on love

For those in need of a summer anthem, Marie Naffah has provided just that. “The Cage” is a gorgeous telling of free-spiritedness told in a sonically diverse fashion, making the impact of its message all the more powerful. The song acts as the first taste of her upcoming EP, and whenever that reaches the ears of the public, it will surely provide an unmatched ecstasy.
