Love is magical and mystical – it moves us all in different ways, changing our rhythms as we fall in line with something new. Sanders Bohlke celebrates love in his breathtaking “Never Wake,” an anthemic and impassioned ode to intimacy soaked in the heat of the moment.
Silence, madness
It’s deafening, I can feel it
So come a little closer
I wanna hear your heartbeat
I wanna feel you next to me
Next to me

Known for crafting ethereal, heartwrenching indie folk songs, Bohlke sprang out of Mississippi about ten years ago and has been running ever since. Cloudy and introspective, his music tends to fall somewhere between Arcade Fire, Lord Huron, and Radiohead – sonically dark, brooding outbursts of emotion filled with vibrant harmonies, keyboads, and guitars – and more recently, haunting strings and electronic sounds.
With two albums and an EP under his belt, Bohlke embarked in new directions earlier last month with the unveiling of SVIBES, an electronic R&B duo consisting of himself and German music producer Chris de Luca. Their debut single “Colored Walls / Fly Low” (June 15, 2018) radiates with emotive depth as Bohlke cries his sweet falsetto out into the heavens, supported by a cool, muted soundscape.
“Never Wake” is a smooth contrast to SVIBES, exhibiting Sanders Bohlke’s personal growth as a solo artist since 2015’s The Night EP. A massive Sam Smith and Adele-sized emotional outpouring, “Never Wake” finds Bohlke rising from a whisper, to a shout, to a cry as he cherishes that which is most important in his life: Love.
Black out , heaven opens
The world slows down
Your walls and my walls
Crumbling down
I wanna keep breathing
But you’re taking my breath away
I wanna keep feeling what I’m feeling
Don’t care if I suffocate
I wanna keep dreaming, if I’m dreaming
And I don’t wanna ever wake
Up from you
“Honestly, I just wanted to write a really romantic song,” Sanders Bohlke tells Atwood Magazine. “I wanted to intimately portray that feeling when you’re with a person and time stops and you can’t breathe, and you’d do anything to just stay in that moment.”
“Never Wake” truly does bathe in the feeling. Opening with moody piano chords laced with jazzy blue notes, the song swells with excitement and anticipation as Bohlke captures love’s sublime euphoria. An emotive string section adds colorful textures to the turbulence of feeling, but ultimately it’s Bohlke’s own voice that leads the way: He rises and falls in cascades of passion, inviting us to join him in his rapture and breathe in the fumes of togetherness.
Whispers in the darkness
Your body moves; it’s flawless
Come a little closer
I wanna hear your heartbeat
I wanna feel you trembling
Trembling
A breathtaking, breathtaken song, “Never Wake” is the fresh love-laced anthem we’ve been waiting for. Stream Sanders Bohlke’s dynamic explosion of intimacy and warmth exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
