Some music fans like to treat emerging bands like growth stocks.
They like to get strong ROI on artists that show talent and energy; when the band hits it big later, they get a sense of pride and satisfaction. Well, I’ve got a prospectus for you here.
Starfox and the Fleet are releasing their first full album, Matter + Energy, this year and Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering their lead single, “Kamasutra Blues.” For those of you charting this New York group, I can assure you that they’re moving in the right direction.

Golden bubbles,
dripping in your glitter
Baby, I came here for you
You know I ain’t any other lover
Baby, watch me as I do
She’s the sound of
salivating tongues, yeah
Isn’t it fun? Isn’t it fun? Oooh
Your chokehold’s strict like an enemy
Kamasutra blues are gonna be the death of me
Fight or flight, the music of the night
Can’t hide the sound of desire,
you’re taking me higher
“Kamasutra Blues” starts with energy from the get-go. Produced by Bryan Scary, it’s a hyperkinetic stew that mixes ‘60s organ with the modern version of psychedelia like Pond or Gorillaz; and it splits the difference between art rock and glam rock – resulting in a glorious, messy, glitter-streaked blast of psych-rock excess.
The “Kama Sutra” in “Kamasutra Blues” are where the lyrics are committed to hedonism, in all its glamor and guts. It argues that sex is both a way into and a way out of Hell – with a touch of sexual braggadocio.
Where the Kama Sutra is an ideal, elevated version of sex – “Kamasutra Blues” presents more of a Vegas Kamasutra, where a hangover is never far behind. Which is where the bacchanalia energy of the music nicely matches the lyrical content.
In the town of Sodom and Gomorrah
Light a match and set me free
You can be addicted to your sins
Le péché me donne la vie
When the midnight oil starts to run, yeah
Isn’t it fun? Isn’t it fun? Oooh
Your chokehold’s strict like an enemy
Kamasutra blues are gonna
be the death of me
Fight or flight, the music of the night
Can’t hide the sound of desire,
you’re taking me higher
Kamasutra, me and you
I’m coming in for the
Kamasutra blues

“Starfox and the Fleet is a retro-psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll spaceship, and for ‘Kamasutra Blues’ I wanted to drive it somewhere that would honor the sex-positive underground of NYC, where everything feels glamorous, euphoric, and a little dangerous,” frontwoman Starfox tells Atwood Magazine. “We took the shagadelic spirit of Austin Powers and launched it into the future with elements of dream pop, garage rock, and a psychedelic organ jam that lands somewhere entirely its own.”
Yes, Starfox and the Fleet are overcommitting to a chaotic atmosphere – but that works. This dramatic single offers an energetic blueprint for next-level moments in their high-energy live shows. I really look forward to them evolving and sharpening in the studio – their previous singles have terrific hooky, mid-tempo energy – and I love the Flaming Lips kitchen sink mayhem of this offering.
The messiness is inseparable from the appeal. It’s the thrill of hearing a band move toward something bigger in real time. Starfox and the Fleet have a compelling, singular sound – it’s a great time to listen to or see an emerging band with personality before the edges get sanded off. They’ve already managed to figure out how to bring most of their carnival-like stage energy into the studio. So, get in on the ground floor, and stream “Kamasutra Blues” exclusively on Atwood Magazine!

Your chokehold’s strict like an enemy
