Oahu was the start of something special for teenage friends Tyke James and Willie Fowler.

The two formed a band called The Moss, and the rest is history. They recently made a third addition to the group, with Tyler Harris on guitar.  Inspired by musicians like Pinegrove and Kevin Morby, The Moss channel their roots and complex lyrics into bright indie rock tunes.

Singer/songwriter Tyke James uses his lived experiences as fuel for the band’s lyrics – and “Oasis,” taken off their latest EP, Free Ride, is no different. Giving your everything to a person results in feeling lost without them. When the tie breaks, it’s easy to realize how dependent you once were, losing your sense of self-identity in the process.

An oasis is an escape from reality – a place where chaos is paused and living begins. A vacation from the world, and a reminder of life’s treasures. Inner thoughts are silenced, and instinctively a person lets loose.

Everyone has their own safe haven, and for James, it’s the connection he felt with a particular person. “‘Oasis’ is a song about finding someone at a point in time who makes you feel seen,” The Moss’ lead vocalist shares. “It’s about how necessary, but fleeting it is to have someone to talk to.”

You became my oasis
And I lay my arms down for good
Because of all the places
My peace was right here next to you
Oh, you

The lyric, “My peace was right here next to you” describes this idea that without his oasis, James felt restless. His peace was determined by this person, and now that they’re gone, he feels lost.

I don’t wanna be sad for myself
I just wanna be real
And it takes time to process everything I feel
With that being said
I don’t have much to say
Turns out my thoughts
haven’t been much but in the way

Oases are deceptive – they open your eyes to a life that only exists in dreams.

When anyone gets a glimpse of this, they start to imagine what life could be like in this new reality. The heart starts to take over, and logic steps away. An oasis has the power to bring a person out of all of their problems, but only provides a temporary solution. No matter the emotional high it gives you, an oasis must come to an end eventually.
