This time around, Common Kings have teamed up with renouned Miami hip-hop group ¡Mayday! to deliver an irresistible ode to positive thinking and optimism. Boasting a lively reggae beat with smooth, pop-friendly R&B undertones, “Today’s A New Day” is dynamic, spirited, and damn near catchy enough to brighten the darkest of clouds.
The song also couldn’t come at a better time for Common Kings, who have a lot to celebrate and be grateful for: Their debut album Lost In Paradise (released February 2017 via Island Empire Records) just received a well-earned GRAMMY nomination for Best Reggae Album. It would seem the stars are all aligning for the Orange County, California-based group, making it all the more fitting for their next song to be one that gives back – and “Today’s A New Day” most certainly does.
Lead singer Sasualei “Jr King” Maliga opens the song with an impassioned croon: “When it feels like all you had was yesterday, don’t you worry, don’t you worry about a thing,” he advises us, pushing all the emotion in the world into this singular moment. “Might not believe me, but trust me when I say: Today’s a new day, a new day, new day.” So begins Common Kings’ journey toward spiritual enlightenment.
Their message is simple; it’s one you’ve heard countless times before, from loved ones and friends, coworkers, and maybe even strangers. Yet Common Kings’ delivery lends this age-old adage a fresh twist, and so as the guitars pop and the drums pulse a head-bobbing rhythm, we find ourselves more open than normal to change.
¡MayDay! rappers Bernz and Ben Miller (Wrekonize) lend their own upbeat words of wisdom in the song’s extended third verse, each capturing his own serene space and evoking it with effortless ease:
Baby, it’s a new day
Let’s go make a movie
But before we turn up
Let’s take a moment to tune in
Yesterday was rough
and I woke up needing a mood change
So let’s chase the sun
And then at night we’ll do a moon dance
