A special kind of undeterred energy courses through Thehiz’s debut single. It’s the passion of someone who has, time and again, faced their challenges head-on; someone who has seen the odds stacked against them, and pushed forward anyway; someone who hasn’t let anything stop them from pursuing their dreams. Cinematic and charged, the undeniably epic “SUBMARINE” is a relentless alt-rock anthem for underdogs everywhere. Whatever’s holding you back from being your greatest, let this song inspire you to persevere and overcome.

SUBMARINE - Thehiz
SUBMARINE – Thehiz
You saw me falling, looking out your window
You tried to gun it, take me out your motto
Look up still here, decked out still win
You saw me trying, my heart out on the window
You tried to end it, smirked when I hit the floor
Look up still here, rigged out still win

Released February 22, “SUBMARINE” is a stunning introduction to Ethiopian-born artist Thehiz, who describes himself as a “rocker at heart.” Brought up on bands like Coldplay and Switchfoot, the artist gives his own spin to the decades-old stadium-sized rock sound. “SUBMARINE” calls to mind such contemporaries as Imagine Dragons and twenty one pilots with its sheer grandeur and heavy, hard-hitting beats.

Lyrically, Thehiz channels a spirit of resilience in his music, declaring not only that he’s “still here, decked out still [to] win,” but also clapping back at all those who would see him fail or stood in his way: “You saw me trying, my heart out on the window. You tried to end it, smirked when I hit the floor…”

All this leads to a radiant chorus seeing the artist double-down – betting on himself to make it through in the end.

Look at me now
I’m built for the clouds
Too bad you tried
You tried to sink a submarine

“The song deals with feeling marginalized and cast out by those who don’t want you to succeed,” Thehiz shares. “It’s an anthem for every underdog to keep believing — no matter what anyone has to say about you. It’s funny because I wrote the song at a time when it looked like nothing was really going for me, in many ways. But here I am. I’m living the things I wrote so confidently about, simply because I believed. My desire is that others would be spurred to believe too.”

“‘SUBMARINE’ was a very unplanned song,” he adds. “I had been working on another single at the time. One day I was just messing around on my guitar and I heard this rad melody in my head. I sang it out and had the chorus in like 5 minutes. It just hit so right, I knew that it would be my debut single right then. I produced the song in my apartment. My wife has graciously allowed me to turn half of our living room into a studio. I’m working on a lot of fun stuff and can’t wait to share them with the world this year!”

Book a day in my shoes, come cherish all the moments
Beating down my door all you’ll get is regret
See I’m tried but here still, so swoop in for the kill
The kill
Look at me now
I’m built for the clouds
Too bad you tried
You tried to sink a submarine

Try to sink a submarine, and it will keep floating; it will soldier on, resolute.

“SUBMARINE” is intimate enough to carry the alluring weight of sincerity, yet vague enough to apply to just about any obstacles and hurdles life throws our way. It’s dramatic, it’s dynamic, and it’s utterly invigorating – an enviable first step into the arena full of both passion and promise. This is only the very beginning for Thehiz, and we can’t wait to hear where he takes us next.

Look at me now
I’m built for the clouds
Too bad you tried
You tried to sink a submarine
