Can I hold on? Can I stand in line?

Following one’s dreams sounds glamorous, but for so many dreamers their pursuit entails an endless amount of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice with relatively little reward. Those disciplined enough to undergo that kind of rigor may still never see their hopes fulfilled – but no matter what happens to us, there’s value in believing in something so much that you give it your all. Brooklyn’s Birch captures the strain and tenacity of chasing a dream in her glittering new song “Your Gold,” a sweetly ethereal indie pop song.

Your Gold - Birch
Your Gold – Birch
I’m wide awake while you’re
dreaming, you’re gold

I lay here watching the ceiling turn gold
Time would halt when you stopped the clock but everything’s changing
I am not who I was
Were my excuse to survive
Now you won’t stop me

The moniker for Brooklyn-based musician and producer Michelle Birsky, Birch first debuted her progressive voice and experimental pop music  in 2015. This past year has been one of tremendous excitement and acclaim for Birch, seeing the release of her debut album femme.two this past April.

In premiering the title track earlier in 2018, Atwood Magazine declared that Birch’s “future is bright and bold, and we cannot help but laud the artist for taking charge of the conversation.“ An immersive, ambient single, “femme.two” is “a dynamic and heartfelt assertion of strength, hope, perseverance, and conviction” that challenges traditional notions of beauty.

Can I hold on can I stand in line?
Shouldn’t let go or I’ll fall behind
You make me wanna stay
Make me wanna wait
Can I hold on can I stand in line?
I like the way that you’re loving me
I close my eyes and I see your dream

Forever a student of the interplay between electronic and pop music, Birch’s new release is bustling and sweeter synth pop than much of her past work. The song is built off a series of vocal chants, feeling like an outburst of rejoicing – a standstill in revelry.

“‘Your Gold’ is a song about the grit of chasing a dream,” Birch tells Atwood Magazine. “During the Gold Rush, thousands of people flooded towards the same goal: To build themselves a prosperous future. In this saturated digital age, this is a song about questioning my ability to reach my own goals and ultimately making the decision to follow my own path, rather than follow the herd… Coming off the heels of a crazy year, where I released my debut LP femme.one (April, 2019) and scored my first feature film Asking For It (coming in 2020), ‘Your Gold’ marks a new era for Birch: Energetic, vibrant, and fun.”

Time would halt when you stopped the clock but everything’s changing
I am not who I was
Were my excuse to survive
Now you won’t stop me
Can I hold on can I stand in line?
Shouldn’t let go or I’ll fall behind
You make me wanna stay
Make me wanna wait
Can I hold on can I stand in line?

Having spent so much of her first record deconstructing stereotypes and fighting “the man” at every turn, both Birch the artist and Birsky the creator deserve a moment of unabashed celebration. 2019 has been a memorable one, and this is the first time we’re really allowed to experience Birsky’s own feelings of pride in her work.

All is not fine and dandy or fun and games, but this song is nevertheless an overall uplifting experience. Birch expresses the tension between chasing a dream and maintaining one’s relationships; she expresses how some people can be toxic to the achievement of our goals, and hinder us and our journeys. The chorus’ push and pull between staying and waiting, and surging ahead speaks to the inevitable tension and blowback of giving something – and not someone – your all. There are repercussions for all actions, but when you’re as determined as Birch shows herself to be, you keep on carrying on no matter what, without fail.

“Your Gold” marks a bold new direction for Birch, whose recent music has never failed to leave an indelible impression. Stream the new single below and stay tuned for more from Birsky as she opens herself up and dives deeper into her own struggles on her latest sweet release.

I hope you’re happy when the wind blows right
You know exactly where I wanna fly
Can I hold on can I stand in line?
Shouldn’t let go or I’ll fall behind
You make me wanna stay
Make me wanna wait
Can I hold on can I stand in line?
