With summer fast-approaching, there’s no better time to soak in some buoyant, catchy, and colorful indie pop – and a bright up-and-comer from Florida has just the thing to start the upcoming season off right. Nic Howell’s new song dazzles the ears as he delves into a world of (bitter)sweet nostalgia and romantic strife. A sun-kissed summery jam, “Morning” glows with radiant melodies as the young artist immerses himself in tension, longing, heartache, and release. It’s delightfully upbeat and emotionally torn all at once – a turbulent pairing that makes for a perfect match in song.

I know you’re probably gonna hate me in the morning
Even though I gave you everything you wanted
Wish I could click the red button and simply ignore it
We tried this shit 100 times and you still can’t avoid it
I don’t like it when you’re standing at a distance
And I don’t think that there’s a way for us to fix this cause
I’m in your bed then I’m left on read
Somebody save me
You’re fucking crazy
And I’ve been trying again, trying again
But you’ve been lying again, lying again

Released May 14, 2021, “Morning” follows “Tacos & Captain,” “Just Tell Me When,” and “Anxious” as Nic Howell’s fourth single of the year. The 19-year-old Orlando-based singer/songwriter teamed up with Nashville’s Jordy King to create a warm, sunny sonic daydream that, when we listen close, is as much a cry for help as it is a soothing pop anthem.

Howell comes into his own through introspective lyrics and an energetic, soaring chorus:

Peepin my location when I’m gone
But we both know I’ve been doing nothing wrong
I’ve tried to tell you that I love you but I feel like you don’t notice
You don’t show affection and you act like I don’t know this
I don’t like it when creepin at a distance
and sometimes I wish that we never existed

I don’t wanna sleep alone but when I do it feels right
Every time you come around me you just wanna fight
Somebody save me
You’re fucking crazy
And I’ve been trying again, trying again
But you’ve been lying again, lying again

“I feel like everyone has definitely gone through these struggles or is currently going through them,” Howell tells Atwood Magazine. “Let this song be your release of that negative energy, once the chorus hits everyone should get the point.”

No more sexting you
At three am in the morning
When I’m leaving and got nothing to do
Somebody save me
She’s fucking crazy

Arriving just in time for summer, “Morning” is a refreshing burst of catchy sound and intimate reflection. The teenager taps into his core, and the result is a heavy-hearted, yet equally light song that pulls at the heartstrings while whisking us into our own reveries. Some of us may get caught up in the light, whilst others get lost in the haze – but no matter what, listeners are sure to come away from “Morning” with a renewed appreciation for Nic Howell’s blossoming artistry.

Manipulation, contemplation
These all get reciprocated
Every time you hit my line
I just wish we never dated
You doing the voodoo shit
Yeah the end of the movie shit
I stick to the cutie shit
No I can’t move on with a love like this
Somebody save me
You’re fucking crazy
And I’ve been trying again, trying again
But you’ve been lying again, lying again
