This song is about making peace with your past, owning your story, and letting the gifts of wisdom and resiliency make you a better person for it.
“And I know better than to dwell upon a history I can’t rewrite,” Katie Boeck sings soulfully in her latest single, reckoning with the past while simultaneously making peace with it. “Time is a cruel, cruel thing, until you see it all in hindsight.” Life doesn’t always turn out the way we expected it to go, and we certainly don’t always get what we want, but we control our own narratives: Good or bad, our stories are ours to tell, and the more we take ownership over our lives, the better off we are. Ultimately, we all have baggage; we all took the long and winding road to get here. Boeck accepts her past and owns her story in her new single “Over Again,” a seductively smoldering and deeply intimate enchantment.
All the pieces of myself that I’ve withheld
inside some secret sky
All the feelings I forgot felt
are melting in the morning light
And I know better than to dwell
upon a history I can’t rewrite
time is cruel cruel thing
Until you see it all in hindsight
So would you do it over again
There ain’t no second chances
But you can’t pretend
You wouldn’t do it different If you
Could do it over again
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the live video for “Over Again,” the lead single taken off Katie Boeck’s forthcoming new album Calico, due out April 28, 2023. Described as capturing “the arc of maturing relationships — from naïveté and illusion to self-love and sovereignty,” Calico is a stunning reintroduction to the Nashville-based singer/songwriter, whose jazz-inflected acoustic work recalls artists like Joni Mitchell and Carole King, albeit with a certain Laurel Canyon overlay.
The premise of “Over Again” stems from that age old question, Would you do it over again? – all the while knowing, quite plainly, that we only get one shot at this life, and that there are no re-dos. Boeck sings hot on the mic, surrounded by an ensemble of players (Dustin Ransom, Rich Brinsfield, Cy Winstanley, and Adam Bokesch) who together create a stunning bed of warm, hypnotic, and welcoming sound. Between the heated vocal harmonies and the glistening, gently reverb-laden guitars, “Over Again” aches with raw, radiant passion.
I always said it would take losing me for you to be the one I’d choose
a hopeless warning though when you don’t know the worth of what you stand to lose
And I could feel my heart descending into fires of the deepest blue
I was burning at the stake
And that was never good enough for you
So would you do it over again
there ain’t no second chances
for a happy end
nothing left to make except amends
Cuz loves another story and you can’t pretend
You wouldn’t do it different if you
Could do it over again
“‘Over Again’ is about accepting the consequences of your own choices,” Boeck tells Atwood Magazine. “We all start out with good intentions but along the way things get distorted, we grow in different directions, our conditioning informs our behavior and our shadows start to reveal themselves. You get to a point in life where everyone has a past or some sort of history their operating from. I think an important part of healing from life’s unexpected twists and turns is being able to get to a place where you can say to yourself, ‘I’m at peace with how it all unfolded. I’d do it that exact same way, over and over again, because every part my experience has brought me to the place and person I am now.’ It’s a hypothetical thing to contemplate, but for me there was so much empowerment in it. I wouldn’t change I thing. This is my life. I own it. I’m living, I’m growing. I’m evolving. What else is there to do?”
When you experience any type of perceived failure in life there’s a lot to process, including the fact that your actions and decisions have lifelong consequences.
“Over Again” is resilient and resounding: A heartfelt song with a stunningly mature perspective on life and an endlessly alluring groove that instantly gets under the skin. So would you do it over again
And lose ourselves along the path of good intentions
nothing left to make except amends
Cuz loves another story and you can’t pretend
You wouldn’t do it different if you could do it over
I wouldn’t do it different if I could do it over again
