Tender and sweet, Ed Patrick’s first song of the year is a softly stirring reverie: An homage to a beautiful moment in time, forever crystallized in song. The sublime warmth of connection comes to life in the fragile “Leaf,” a beautifully intimate and achingly raw indie folk serenade.

Leaf – Ed Patrick
We met at midday
Halfway up the mountain
I was four minutes late
Not that I was counting
Standing on the corner
Hair down to your hips
Baby I was born before you
But I’m too young for this

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Leaf,” a sun-kissed song full of light. Ed Patrick’s first release since late 2021 sees the London-based singer/songwriter capturing a summer day spent with a loved one, with diaristic lyrics capturing his innermost emotions and a delicate, raw acoustic performance channeling those feelings into wondrous, enchanting sound.

Understated yet epic, intimate yet cinematic, “Leaf” glows with heart-on-sleeve vulnerability; golden-hued and glistening, it’s the most beautiful whisper on the wind you’ve ever heard.

Patrick’s chorus is a poetic climax filled with both stillness and movement; we can feel his inner fragility exposed as he sings twice, “Shaking like a leaf on a tree, that’s me,” spilling his soul in song.

I followed your footsteps
Twice around the town
Beauty in a black dress
Stranger in a crowd
Shaking like a leaf on a tree
That’s me
Shaking like a leaf on a tree
That’s me

Speaking to Atwood Magazine, Patrick is reticent to give his song’s full story away, but he describes the track as a day in the life.

“I like to leave a song’s meaning as open to interpretation as possible,” he tells Atwood Magazine. “The reason for this is when I was younger, I read an interview with Rickie Lee Jones where she talked about the story of one of my favorite songs, and it changed the way I listened to it forever. That being said, the lyric to Leaf (to me) is an almost verbatim account of a day I had in 2021.”

“The recording is a glorified demo,” Patrick adds. “I have a habit of recording a rough guitar and vocal, only to never be able to record a ‘proper’ one after. It was recorded at home after a trip to Europe and features two of my favorite musicians — Luis Conte on percussion and Aaron Sterling on additional drums. My friend Piers and I walked around our favorite parts of London on a perfect summer’s day with a Super 8 camera and shot the lyric video for ‘Leaf.'”

The perfect soundtrack to a warm spring or summer’s day, “Leaf” channels emotional warmth into musical sunlight. Bask in the beauty of this gorgeous indie folk song, streaming exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
