“Whistle while you work,” the old Snow White tune goes. And so we did, and we still do: Some of us hum along to songs in our headphones, and others make up their own melodies to fill the stillness of the workday. Ginger Winn used to sing to herself throughout the day, her hands sticky with egg, flour, salt, and sugar as she went about her work as a pastry chef. Behind all that singing was a dream – one many of us have had: To leave the 9 to 5 behind and make music full-time. To sing her songs to audiences far and wide; to share her passion with anyone and everyone willing to listen.
Ginger Winn reintroduced herself as a singer/songwriter in March of this year, and today she celebrates her dream come true with a new song and the announcement of her upcoming debut album. It’s a special moment that acknowledges how far she’s come in a short time, and how much all of this means to her. Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Ginger Winn’s golden-hued second single “Frosting,” a smile-inducing folk song with a very happy ending. Following March’s debut single “Super 8,” which Atwood Magazine praised for its candid intimacy and vulnerability, “Frosting” offers a different kind of behind-the-scenes look at Ginger Winn, introducing us to who she was before she became the “artist” we know now.
Born in South Carolina and now living in South Africa, Winn began singing and songwriting before she was 10 years old. At 16, she left high school behind and fully dedicated herself to musical pursuits, taking on various jobs to support herself – including a gig as a pastry chef, which lasted for three years.
“Frosting” harkens back to that time, when she had to fit music into spare moments of her working life and could not do it 24/7. The song finds her dreaming of leaving edible sweets behind for musical ones, playing off pastry-related language to her heart’s content: “One day I’ll make something sweet,” Winn sings coyly. “I’ll turn all these voices into something so gorgeous. I love to create these treats, but these people need something for their soul to nourish.”

Ginger Winn reintroduced herself as a singer/songwriter in March of this year, and today she celebrates her dream come true with a new song and the announcement of her upcoming debut album.
The “Frosting” music video puts Winn back in a pastry-making mode temporarily as she charts her course from maker of cakes to maker of songs. “This is a surreal version of my inner thoughts while making pastries wishing I was making music, which leads to hand-making the album cover with David Baron – the same way we made the music,” she tells Atwood Magazine.
So close a collaborator that he’s credited on the album’s cover, David Baron is a Hudson Valley, New York-based music producer, composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and recording engineer with three-plus decades of experience in the music world, and an enviable “who’s-who” kind of resume (notable names include The Lumineers, Noah Kahan, and Shawn Mendes, among many others). He currently sits at the Top 5 on both the Rock and Alternative producer Billboard charts, and connected with Ginger Winn thanks to a chance encounter on the freelancing platform Upwork.
“Ginger Winn is a rare diamond – a mature artist who has not released music before (almost unheard of these days),” Baron tells Atwood Magazine. “Her style and songs are diverse in style. They are unified by her personality which is both approachable and a bit mysterious. She has an interesting career ahead of her.”
Winn recorded ten songs in 18 days, working with Baron at his own Sun Mountain Studios in Boiceville, just outside of Woodstock. The result of those efforts is STOP-MOTION, set to release on June 7, 2024 via Keep Good Company Records.
Winn lovingly calls her debut “a 27-minute carousel ride through a renaissance.”
“You will fall in love, build your dreams, rip down reality, face your fears, reconnect with your inner child, and escape this world for a moment while reflecting on your place in it,” she smiles. “A reminder to enjoy what you can, when you can, if you can – because the carousel ride won’t last forever.”
“The album feels like a memoir,” Baron adds. “It captures that ‘day in the life’ like many of the best books and records. I recommend listening to the record as a unified whole. It is exciting to be involved in the inception of an artist as powerful as Ginger.”
Fans will have to wait just a few more months to experience STOP-MOTION in its entirety,
but today they get that second peak into Ginger Winn’s art and artistry in the form of a whimsical, heart-on-sleeve folk song full of grace, cheer, and Winn’s own raw, unfiltered humanity. “Frosting” was written by Winn and Matthew Baione (co-owner of Keep Good Company Records which he runs with his wife, Tina), and recorded and produced by Winn in her bedroom before right before flying from South Africa to make the album.
