We see love as imperfection as the vision slowly fades

There’s an urgency about youth: Whether it’s innate or just learned early on, we all grow up understanding that we won’t be young forever; that our immortal flames don’t last.

That doesn’t mean we can’t cling to the feeling with all our might. Nikhil D’Souza’s new single “Silver and Gold” is a heartfelt anthem of youth and love, a passionate embrace of positive energy glowing with warm light.

Young and fearless, time to be reckless
I’ll be reckless for you
Hold on to this feeling, when dreaming of leaving
Cos time, time will wear us down
“Silver & Gold” – Nikhil D’Souza

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Nikhil D’Souza’s brand new single and music video “Silver and Gold,” off his forthcoming debut album (anticipated 2018 via East West Records/Warner Music UK). The third overall release from the Mumbai-born singer/songwriter is a gloriously evocative outburst of staying power: Charged with a magnetic resilience, D’Souza pours himself into his music with dramatic force. It doesn’t take long to realize Nikhil D’Souza is a definite artist to watch in 2018.

“During early writing sessions I had a conversation about how relationships these days don’t seem to last,” D’Souza explains. “It’s like people get together, then due to other options it becomes a matter of convenience. It’s so easy to end that relationship. But ‘Silver & Gold’ signifies staying together and you have to really put an effort into it – it actually comes from the colour of hair. It also refers to the change of colour in your hair as you age and staying together through all of that.”

When we, when we grow old
We’ll find a way, we’ll find a way
When we, when we are silver and gold
We’ll find a way, we’ll find a way
Stay, stay together

Directed by Toby Warren of The Blind Club, the “Silver and Gold” music video finds D’Souza proclaiming his anthem in an old Indian palace. Magnificent shots of the grandiose architecture and surrounding landscape bring us intimately close to D’Souza’s world, and allow us to consider how that which is “old” can still feel fresh, exciting, and empowered – a core element of the artist’s dazzling song.

“I worked with Toby Warren (The Blind Club) before – he did the ‘Beautiful Mind’ video – so we really wanted to keep the style and flavour consistent, D’Souza tells Atwood Magazine. “We found this really great location just outside of Bombay – it’s like an old palace in the middle of a forest. The tone of the song and the location fit really well, so we decided it was a good place to shoot. So when Toby and the guys came down one of the first things we did was go the location, and it really takes your breath away.”

D’Souza continues, “I also want people to see where I’m from: There is a part of me that spent most of my life in India… Over the last few years I’ve been all over the place in America and the UK, but it’s nice to show people where I’m from, and where I’m coming from.”

Somewhere hearts are bleeding
Do they stop believing
No, that won’t happen to us
When we, when we grow old
We’ll find a way, we’ll find a way

“Silver and Gold” is driven as much by passion as it is by fear – fear that the spirited fire and charm D’Souza so charismatically endorses is inevitably destined to expire. How much of who we are is truly under our control? How do we stave off cynicism and maintain our lust for the world, let alone one another?

We hear incredible urgency in the artist’s hearty cries: “We’ll find a way,” he sings, “to stay together.” He holds the ends of his phrases, letting them ring out as long as the meter will allow. His is a trial against time and against fate. The odds have been against our fleeting youth from the start, but that doesn’t stop “Silver and Gold” from being a fervent, invigorating rallying cry.

Don’t let your love fade. Don’t let time change you. Don’t let your passion wither, and don’t let the twinkle in your eye burn out. Hold on to your spark, and it just might last your whole lifetime.
