Heartache has a nasty knack of sticking around – lingering like an empty crater in the pit of our stomachs, waiting for someone or something to come fill it and make it whole. It’s an emotion we humans just can’t seem to kick, no matter how hard we try – thus, while 10,000 songs have already been written about broken hearts, 10,000 more will be written tomorrow. Lynda’s bittersweet debut single “UFO” evokes the discomforting alienation of heartache and unrequited love in a melancholic indulgence of sci-fi synthpop.

Am I a fool for loving you?
Does that boy care about you, the way I do?
Do you think you’re something special?
Do you think that I don’t know?
You’re like a UFO.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “UFO,” the debut single from South-East London duo Lynda and lead track off the band’s forthcoming debut EP. Formed in 2016, Lynda is the brainchild of producer-writers Russ Jones and Youcef Khelil, who hail from Wales and Algeria respectively and met, of all places, while working at American Apparel. The band’s 2017 “taster” tracks depicted a developing artistry engrossed in the deep rhythms and vibrant swells of ’80s new wave and modern synthpop, but it is in “UFO” that Lynda truly take off on their own: Their debut introduces a pulsing, padded sound that mixes the heat of bands like The 1975 and Nightly, with the sci-fi indulgence of the Stranger Things soundtracks.

There’s no limit to the emotional range of Lynda’s warmth, as the duo passionately display in “UFO.” Wrapped in heavy nostalgia and steeped in confusion and sadness, the song catapults listeners into a dark and intimate corner – that murky part of our minds where nightmares come true.

Got me feeling
Got me feeling
You’re like a UFO.
You’re looking around just to find a way out.
Got me feeling
Got me feeling
You’re like a UFO
Got me feeling.

Yet in spite of all this drama, “UFO” manages to also come off as a polished, vibing pop song – the kind to soundtrack our late night dreamstates. “UFO is a story of unrequited love… the feelings are almost fake or non-existent, like a UFO,” Lynda tell Atwood Magazine. “We are also both big fans of ’80s and ’90s sci-fi movies, and we wanted to create a sound that was inspired by that genre.”

Turbulent and sweet, stormy and dazzling, “UFO” hits home for anyone who’s experience the true ache of loving someone who doesn’t love you back. It brings us together, inviting us to coexist with the warmth of passion and the turbulence of distance – an ill-fated dance, but still moving nonetheless.

Stay tuned for more from Lynda in the months to come as the Londoners continue to introduce their sound, style, and aesthetic. “UFO” may be filled with pain, but out of that pain comes something beautiful; stream the debut single now, exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
