There’s a darkness on the edge of town –
– only this time, it’s dressed in waves of glistening, silken vocals and drenched in shimmering guitars. deary’s sophomore single is an intimate, ethereal tempest: A raw and resonant reckoning whose lush exterior can’t make up for the intensely visceral aching within. Born out of the inner darkness we can never fully expunge, “Beauty in All Blue Satin” is a soul-stirring fever dream: A hauntingly beautiful, emotionally charged eruption.
Lace on the balcony
There’s no more time, honey
Late for the company
Wait for the rest of me
Beauty in all blue satin
Released May 17, 2023 via Sonic Cathedral, “Beauty in All Blue Satin” is a breathtakingly delicate song, and a shiver-inducing return from London-based shoegaze/dream pop band, deary.
The duo of multi-instrumentalists Ben and Dottie debuted in January with “Fairground,” a captivating introduction that instantly evoked references to Mazzy Star and Slowdive. “Beautifully ethereal and achingly intimate, deary’s debut single is a visceral shoegaze dream,” we wrote upon its release.
Layered in lilting, reverb-drenched guitars and shuffling drums, with Dottie’s seductive voice melting over everything like the moody, soothing cherry on top, “Fairground” explored the sensory overload of London through a richly atmospheric, unapologetically alternative lens. “Beauty in All Blue Satin” is the follow-up such a stunning song deserves, finding deary continue to unveil their artistry through an intimately expansive five minute upheaval: The soundtrack to an ending.
“We felt it was important to show a different side of us on this single,” Ben shares. “‘Fairground’ is rooted in its looping samples and repetition, which could seemingly go on forever, whereas if ‘Beauty in all Blue Satin’ was stripped down to the bare bones, it’s essentially a lament. It was written after an exhaustive few weeks in lockdown listening to Interpol’s Turn On The Bright Lights, which is one of my favourite records. The guitars constantly battle with the vocals for attention, and I wanted to write a guitar line that leads everything else, weaving between the vocals and layering as the track builds.”
Dressed like a symphony
Pearl rain falls so pretty
Beauty in all blue satin
“When I first heard the demo, I was immediately struck by its sultry darkness and wanted the vocals and lyrics to tell a similar tale,” Dottie adds. “I found the drums particularly inspiring, with the snare punching through the shimmering guitars creating a vision equally glamorous and dirty.”
“’Beauty in all Blue Satin’ went through a lot of stages and at first we struggled to find an angle we really loved,” she adds. “Anna Calvi’s writing on the Peaky Blinders soundtrack was a real inspiration, putting herself in the mind of a main character. Once that character was born, we knew we had to go theatrical with it, like the line ‘dressed like a symphony, pearl rain falls so pretty,’ emoting this kind of slo-mo death from a balcony at some glamorous Great Gatsby-esque party, with the prettiest satin and pearls hiding a wealth of secrets.”
“Beauty in All Blue Satin” continues to build out deary’s world beyond their debut, showcasing a bold, dark side to the duo’s identity as they prove their ability to hold our ears, minds, and hearts hostage for five hypnotizing minutes.
Get lost in the warmth, the churn, and the beautiful agony of this spellbinding seduction.
