Love can be pure terror.

The rush of blood to your cheeks and the pounding heartbeat that follows is similar to the reaction one has when watching a horror film. But that response proves it’s real. It’s real, it’s new, and therefore it’s terrifying. Texan alternative rock band Glare put it best in their latest track, “Guts“: “Lay with me, it consumes your body. Does it feel real? Does it feel real?

Though they’re asking if it feels real, they know it does. That intensity can’t be ignored. The phrase “it consumes your body” describes these feelings as an invading spirit. They welcome it wholeheartedly, but there’s a slight fear that their partner won’t. It’s the anticipated heartbreak that triggers these anxieties, but that’s what makes it real.

Glare's Sunset Funeral -
Glare’s debut album ‘Sunset Funeral’ is out April 4th via Deathwish Inc. + Sunday Drive Records
Decay with me
Forget your body
Does it feel real?
Feel real
I crumble when you’re around
I adore you
Can I see you now?

The anxiety is a constant reminder of how good love feels, yet it’s so hard to articulate. “Guts” expresses this beautifully. It’s a shimmering daydream of love and desire. From chugging guitar lines to ethereal vocals, Glare bring that traditional shoegaze sound to the forefront while maintaining the DIY quality they’ve come to embody.

The most captivating aspect of the track is the trance-like vocalizations of Glare’s lead singer, Toni Ordaz. This vocal style is common in the genre, but the low-toned, swirling vocals sway effortlessly from ear to ear, making them distinctly their own. The vocals feel distant and nearly out of reach mimicking the inner workings of the listener’s deepest thoughts.

This isn’t just the band’s world; they expanded it to invite the listener into a safe space filled with distorted tunes and dreamy production.

It’s loud like the mind, but somehow that’s comforting. There’s a warmth that, through all the noise, holds the track together. It lends an indescribable lightness that truly captures the emotions portrayed in the lyrics. These feelings of anxiety aren’t unique, but they are embarrassing and often crippling. Glare is channeling that fear of new love to spark creativity in “Guts.”

Lay with me
It consumes your body
Does it feel real?
Does it feel real?
I crumble when you’re around
I adore you
Can I see you now?
I crumble when you’re around
Let’s be dirt in the ground

“Guts” arrives on the heels of to “Mourning Haze,” Glare’s initial release in August, which deals with losing someone you love. These tracks blend nicely, showcasing the ardor of the band as they navigate one of life’s hardest moments. Death is a disruptor, but so is love. In both cases, the world stops spinning, and it suddenly feels hard to breathe. Just like “Mourning Haze,” “Guts” uses a transitional period in life to express the fear that accompanies it. Whether it’s love or loss, it’s inevitable and real.

Though the album isn’t out yet, both tracks explore themes of loss and difficult emotions. They imperfectly address feelings that are hard to reach. Guitarist Toni Ordaz puts it best, stating, “[This is] for people who don’t know how to talk about how they feel.”

Both tracks take you on a wave of emotion and leave you mesmerized by the whirling soundscapes, hazy production, and punchy guitar. These raw aspects shine through most of all in this track, where you can almost feel the heartbeat of each band member as they work tirelessly to create the perfect mood.

“The song had several iterations before it was finalized. Months after getting the final mixes back, the lyrics were reworked, and the vocals were rerecorded. It’s a special song for us because we mulled over the tone, trying to get it right.”

Adore you can I see you now
It’s safe to lay your body down
I crumble when you’re around
Let’s be dirt in the ground
Adore you can I see you
To the earth we are bound

Glare stand out among the shoegaze revivalists, and “Guts” proves it.

From its subject matter to the impressive textures of the instrumentation, it’s clear they care deeply about their craft. Glare goes above and beyond to showcase their talents while staying true to their DIY roots.

On April 4th, their debut album, Sunset Funeral, will reveal to the world exactly who they are and what they represent.
