Pulsing with dark urgency, Moscow indie pop band Hospital’s new single “In the Evening” is a spirited guitar-pop anthem of persistence and fortitude.

We all dwell in darkness from time to time – falling down that personal well and soaking in our own doom and gloom. Still, we persevere – we carry on, whether through individual strength or through the support of those around us. Hospital’s new single captures a moment of solitude and resilience: Pulsing with dark urgency, “In the Evening” is a spirited guitar-pop anthem of persistence and fortitude.

in the evening
why should i care?
in the morning
should i be here?
burning matches on the bus floor
you drink too much to sleep too long

Now with two albums under their belt and experience supporting the likes of Lana Del Ray, The Neighbourhood and The Kooks, Hospital are gearing up to break out into Europe and beyond in 2018.

That all begins with “In the Evening,” out everywhere this Friday, 3/9/18. In constructing their latest record, Hospital heavily leaned on influences from the ’80s and ’90s, citing the likes of Tears for Fears, INXS and The Cure in inspiring their carefully-crafted sound. “In the Evening” catapults us into a familiar, yet distant world full of reverb-swathed guitar licks that pop with passion and fury.

It’s the ideal soundscape for Hospital to rise and take their stand:

i just can’t give it up
cause i feel the beat goes on
i can feel it in my blood
i can feel it
i guess i can wait forever
you can not resist forever
if you think i am not the one
leave me now or never

“‘In the Evening’ is the first song we started to record for the next album back in 2016 and actually, it was probably the toughest one,” frontman Egor Berdnikov tells Atwood Magazine. “We did so many takes and mixes, it felt like we were going totally crazy trying to make it sound right. In the end, we had to take a complete break from it. We came back to it only 3 months ago and finally got right that bittersweet element we were looking for.” Rock and pop sonic flavors melt together in a rush of pure, intense energy.

Berdnikov explains, “This song is about that sudden feeling, where you think you don’t need anybody and nobody needs you… but despite all of that, you want to move forward and see what happens next. It’s a slightly gloomy message, with a positive twist, delivered through a detached vocal and contradicting flying guitars.”

are you still there?
in your bedroom
will you miss me?
hope i see you soon
in the same shirt
smoking your lungs out
times are changing
when the melody comes

Memory Waves - Hospital
Memory Waves – Hospital

Uncertainty and determination swell throughout “In the Evening,” coming to a head in each chorus with a climactic overflowing of intimate emotion. Hospital keep their cool and push forward, inspiring us to do the same with whatever barriers and obstacles lie in our own paths. Thus, in spite of what at times may feel like a dismal outlook, “In the Evening” manages to uplift listeners: Through darkness, Hospital shine a light. “In the Evening” is catchy and driving, a redemptive dark anthem glowing with an everlasting fire.

It’s a fire that will keep us coming back to Hospital again and again.

Recorded and produced by their longtime collaborator Konstantin Buglevsky, Memory Waves is out later this year and promises to be Hospital’s most expansive, heated album yet. Stream Hospital’s “In the Evening,” out on all platforms 3/9/18, exclusively on Atwood Magazine!
