I want all of my music to feel like the soundtrack to a coming of age movie, the movies that I grew up on and shaped me. ‘Havin’ a Good Time’ is a reminder to enjoy the journey and to have fun, even when life feels chaotic.

It’s all too easy (and perfectly natural) to feel like life is just one long, never-ending series of issues and obstacles. There’s always something that needs to be taken care of or requires our attention, and with only so many hours in a day to get everything done, it’s easy to lose sight of ourselves – to drown in our work, obsess over our problems, and forget who we are and why we’re here.

There’s a lot to love about life, too.

Electric word life,” the mighty Prince once preached. If only we could bottle up some of that electricity and keep it with us, like a North Star in our back pockets. Thankfully, that’s exactly what Nashville’s Lovetta has done on her dazzling new single: An uplifting and inspiring wash of warm, soul-stirring indie pop, “Havin’ a Good Time” is a conscious reminder to take a step back and recenter ourselves every once in a while and appreciate where we are and what we’re doing: To take stock of life, and recognize the beauty that surrounds us.

The saying on all those hats and t-shirts really is true: Life is good.

We just don’t always allow ourselves to feel good about it.

Havin’ a Good Time – Lovetta
Wish I could live my younger years again
What I would give to go back to the place where I began
To the place where I began
You don’t love me
But I wonder when I’m going under
If I don’t surrender

Released September 28, 2023 via Kill Rock Stars Nashville, “Havin’ a Good Time” is the spiritually cleansing new single and second song of the year from Lovetta.

The solo project for Nashville band Roanoke’s frontwoman Taylor Dupuis has emerged over the past three years with a refreshing burst of sweet n’ soaring indie pop – a contrast to Roanoke’s radiant rock sound. Atwood Magazine praised Lovetta’s previous single, this past May’s “Gravity,” as “a moment of free-spirited revelry so intense that we can’t help but come back.”

“Havin’ a Good Time” is equally euphoric in both its messaging and its tone as the artist reminds herself and all those who listen to own our lives, rather than letting our lives own us. It’s “a bold, tongue-in-cheek declaration that life’s inevitable burnout and overwhelm doesn’t have to get you down” – as she so candidly sings in the song’s smoldering and soulful chorus:

I’m running out of emotion
Can’t really see where I’m going it’s time
I look around this commotions
A good sign
I’m havin’ a good time

Catchy and comforting, “Havin’ a Good Time” is, itself, a good time – a sweet, seductive serenade in the style of bands like Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles. It’s pop, with a touch of heartland warmth and wonder.

“I wrote ‘Havin’ a Good Time’ when I was feeling extremely overwhelmed and lost,” Dupuis tells Atwood Magazine. “I was constantly doing rather than being and everything around me felt chaotic and out of control. I found myself longing for things I didn’t have, and feeling unhappy with where I was. I began to numb out and had a hard time feeling much of anything. I had this moment where I looked around and realized I had so much to be grateful for. I was making movies, making music, spending time with family and friends, and just having so much fun.”

She continues, “‘Havin’ a Good Time’ is the first pop song I’ve written. I wrote it on my acoustic guitar and brought it to my producer Pete Eddins who helped me bring it to life. We went into it with an open mind as far as where to take it sonically, and we came up with something we were both really excited about. It felt new but also nostalgic. The process was so quick, easy and fun. We even ended up using the scratch vocal as the final take.”

“A lot of my music is inspired by my youth, growing up in a small town in Michigan. The nostalgia fuels the lyrics and landscape of the track. I want all of my music to feel like the soundtrack to a coming of age movie, the movies that I grew up on and shaped me. ‘Havin’ a Good Time’ is a reminder to enjoy the journey and to have fun, even when life feels chaotic.”

I’m sad but I can’t bring myself to cry
It’s you, in the back of my mind
wondering if I keep you up at night

Cus you keep me up at night
You don’t love me
But I wonder when I’m going under
If I don’t surrender
I’m running out of emotion
Can’t really see where I’m going it’s time
I look around this commotions
A good sign
I’m havin’ a good time

Despite running out of emotions and not knowing where she’s going – feelings of exhaustion and turmoil to which we can all certainly relate – Lovetta finds her North Star in the people surrounding her. It takes a moment of pause and reflection to come to the realization that “I’m havin’ a good time.”

Yes, we’re going to have bad days – bad weeks, even. To be human is to be capable of feeling that vast spectrum of emotion, from grief’s worst suffering to joy’s greatest euphoria, and everything-between. But we’re only here once, and we deserve to enjoy the ride.

Thanks to a song like “Havin’ a Good Time,” we can always remind ourselves to get back in the driver’s seat and reclaim the reigns whenever life seems to be slipping out of our hands; whenever we seem to be losing sight of ourselves.

You don’t love me
But I wonder if I’m going under
When I don’t surrender
You could love me but I wonder
If we both were younger
Maybe I’ll surrender
You should love me
Cus this hunger is only getting stronger
Tell me to surrender
I’m running out of emotion
Can’t really see where I’m going it’s time
I look around this commotions
A good sign
I’m havin’ a good time
We’re havin’ a good time
I’m havin’ the best time
