When you think of Harvey Street, it’s easy to assume you’re hearing the name of another road.

Don’t be mistaken: Harvey Street are much more than a neighborhood street sign. The Raleigh, North Carolina indie/alternative rock five-piece bring a kinetic spark to everything they do. Whether you’re listening to them from home or catching them live in concert, the band has a way of spreading their contagious presence no matter the distance.

Their latest EP, Insomnia, includes a collection of three singles from 2025 alongside a track that shares the name with the project. “Insomnia,” Harvey Street’s newest song, channels the struggle of sleeplessness through an indie rock lens. The track is meant to make you sing along, and the group lean into that communal energy with enthusiastic lyric videos they’ve posted on social media.

Waking up in sweat
Now I’m dreaming them again
All the nightmares that I’m having
About losing friends and family
This happens all the time
I swear I’m losing my own mind

The more sleep you lose, the less control it feels like you have over your mood, your day, and the rest of your life. When you go through that cycle over and over, it starts to drive you crazy. These lyrics describe not only an irregular sleep schedule, but nightmares that become part of the problem, too. After a while, it feels like a mental battle you’re fighting alone.

Hearing insomnia explored from a musician’s point of view adds another layer to the song.

While many people experience sleeplessness, artists occupy a unique position. After playing shows every night and being on the road with little rest, at what point does a person break down? A lifestyle without sleep isn’t sustainable for anyone, especially for people expected to be fully present the moment they step onstage. The song doesn’t explicitly mention what it’s like to be on tour with insomnia, but it opens the door to that question.

Dear insomnia, you got me crazy
I don’t know if I can keep it up for weeks
Wait, I want control again right now
Yeah, can’t you take the hint
And leave me out
I don’t sleep anymore
I don’t sleep anymore

This part of the chorus almost feels like a letter addressed to insomnia itself. Rather than a cordial welcome, it reads like a private confession, or even an admission of defeat. You can hear the loss in it: control slipping first, then sleep, and sanity soon after.

Harvey Street don’t glamorize the chaos of insomnia; they spin it into something loud and alive.

It’s not just the catchy chorus that sticks, but the song’s honesty – its willingness to turn a hard, lonely subject into something communal, cathartic, and unforgettable.
