I hear everyone talking all the time, I survive…

With its relaxed groove and glistening instrumental flourishes, Junaco’s new single has a way of making us feel lighter than air.

While the whole song is a sonic tranquilizer, one line in particular stands out, resonating for the warmth is brings not only to our ears, but also to our souls. “Don’t you ever look back, my wind is shaken and there’s not enough time to react,” vocalist and songwriter Shahana Jaffer sings, “‘Cause almost certain it’ll all be okay.” Anxiety comes and goes in the very same breath, and in this moment we are reminded of some important life lessons we learned at a young age: Namely, to not sweat the small stuff – and that almost everything, even the seemingly “big” stuff, is pretty small at the end of the day day.

A soothing, sun-kissed indulgence, Junaco’s “Everyone Talking” is a dreamy vacation from reality inviting us to live in the present and enjoy life for what it is: A warm and wondrous adventure.

Everyone Talking - Junaco
Everyone Talking – Junaco
I can’t stand as everyone’s falling
Not enough ways to lose what you wanted
I know you may feel better off alone
One time, not enough ways to change your mind
Not enough days to lose your sight
I know it’s loud again
I hear everyone talking
All the time, I survive
Not like anyone’s taken by surprise

Released July 21, 2023 via Flying Cloud Recordings, “Everyone Talking” is a brightly shining, golden-hued enchantment from Los Angeles, California’s Junaco. The lead single off their forthcoming debut album (out September 22) is a dazzling reintroduction to the duo of Shahana Jaffer and Joey LaRosa, who have established themselves over the past five years as a new voice in the ambient folk, indie rock, and dream pop spaces.

“Their songs are a balance of two forces that work in tandem to mesmerize and enthrall listeners,” Atwood Magazine wrote in a 2020 track premiere of their song, “In Between (Reprise),” going on to praise Jaffer’s sweetly seductive voice that “melts over the immersive soundscape, daring listeners to close our eyes and just be.” Whereas that song was a surrender to the unknown and this new one is about not letting things get to us, those same words could readily describe Junaco’s performance in “Everyone Talking,” and the impact of Jaffer’s vocal work alongside the track’s tender, glowing instruments. Her voice is a beacon of serenity, inviting us to join in the reverie:

Don’t you ever look back
My wind is shaken and there’s not enough time to react
‘Cause I’m almost certain it’ll all be okay
Be okay
I hear everyone talking
All the time, I survive
Not like anyone’s taken by surprise
I hear everyone talking

“‘Everyone Talking’ is the story of our generations’ plight of oversharing, watching what everyone is doing all the time and comparing,” Jaffer tells Atwood Magazine. “The light and breezy feel of the song is meant to be a comedic shrug, since we are all trying to figure it out. Whatever ‘it’ is. The song is meant to feel like a vacation from reality – the lead group vocal represents the childlike quality of experiencing a day for what it is.”

“Everyone Talking” is peaceful and calm; a cathartic seduction that captures the tranquility of a relaxed soul, as well as the wondrous repose of the Catskill Mountains, where Junaco recorded their upcoming album in the early spring of 2022.

“The days were getting warmer, and the flowers were starting to bloom,” the band said of those sessions in an online post. “The 12 song record shares feelings of coming to terms with themselves, and feeling certain about who they are. A coming of age record, if you will. A transition out of accepting some uncertainties, and recognizing that the strongest thing we have is our own minds.”
