Some songs manage to say what they want to say, exactly how it ought to be heard. A warm classic rock-styled ballad, Johnny Goudie’s “Everyone’s Got Something” lays our problems bare for all to see with a well-worn and heavy heart.
She comes by every single day
to tell me how much noise I make
I’m walkin’, I’m walkin’, I’m walkin,
I’m keepin’ her up
Well the rent’s gettin higher
the floor’s never been thick enough

Recalling the likes of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and more recent singer/songwriters like Greg Holden, “Everyone’s Got Something” presents hardship and personal strife through a universal lens. Its title says it all: “Everyone’s got something” – no one is immune to life’s ups and downs, twists and turns.
Goudie expresses the all-encompassing nature of life’s problems in colorful verses that apply to any number of situations:
She says she has got to get some sleep
Every day’s like Hell set on repeat
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry it’s the same old line
I’ve given it out but now I’m taking mine
Having laid out a plethora of familiar issues, Goudie brings everything together in the song’s harmony-laden chorus:
Everyone’s got something
that they’re hiding from
Everyone’s got something
that they’re dying from
Everyone’s got someone
they can’t trust enough
Everyone’s got something
that they’re hiding from
Speaking about the track, Goudie recalls, “Jaimee Harris and I got together to write a song… She showed up and had this chorus that I really connected with. We both had friends that had recently passed and the song felt like it was a reminder of our common humanity and life’s fragility. Plus, it was really catchy.”
No arguments there. Simple and to the point, “Everyone’s Got Something” strikes a common chord by reminding us we’re not alone. Sure, your troubles are yours and his problems are his, but we’re all going through something. Put another way, everybody has skeletons in their closet. Maybe, in recognizing our shared struggle, we can feel a little more connected to the world, and a little less lonely.
