There’s a stillness that lives just below the surface – a sacred silence, untouched by noise or urgency. In that underwater quiet, the world slows down.

Worries float away. Breath becomes sacred. Time dissolves. That’s the world Lucie Glang invites us into on “Underwater Skies” – a tender, tranquil folk-pop reverie that calms the nerves, softens the soul, and offers refuge in sound. Anchored in gentle fingerpicked guitar, muted piano chords, and her aching, intimate vocals, Glang’s first single of the year is a space of serenity and surrender: A song that helps you float when everything else feels like it’s sinking.

Hold your breath and count
Underwater Skies
Mumbled, blurry sounds
Bring your body down
Feet fly over sand
Blue and peaceful towns
Imagine what it’s like
To stay here for some time
Breath out and don’t swim up
The blood pumps, changing tides
A corpse with you inside
The shivering sea around

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Underwater Skies,” the beautifully meditative and emotionally resonant new single from German singer/songwriter Lucie Glang. Out May 22, 2025 via Nashville-based Tonetree, “Underwater Skies” arrives as the first taste of Glang’s upcoming sophomore EP (due in November), and her first musical release of the year.

Collaborating once again with Danish producer Martin Korsgaard (who worked on “Seagull” from her debut EP), Glang crafts an immersive, atmospheric soundscape that transports listeners deep into a world of introspection, stillness, and breath.

Warm acoustic textures wrap around her soft, aching voice as she sings of presence, release, and gentle escape:

Everything now fades
Thoughts let go of you
Everything’s been said
The current takes you far
Float away my dear
Leave it as it was
Imagine what it’s like
To stay here for some time
Breath out and don’t swim up
The blood pumps, changing tides
A corpse with you inside
The shivering sea around

It’s a breathtaking balance of beauty and vulnerability – a song that shimmers with cinematic folk tones while lyrically evoking the disorienting yet soothing experience of being submerged. Written as a form of self-soothing during a time of emotional overwhelm, “Underwater Skies” is as much a balm for Glang as it is for her listeners.

“I wrote ‘Underwater Skies’ during a month where I committed to writing and recording a new idea every day,” Glang tells Atwood Magazine. “This song came out of a day where I felt completely overwhelmed and I tried to calm myself down by describing what it would feel like to just float away. I’ve always loved being underwater, being fully present and letting go of everything pulling me out of the moment. The song mimics that feeling, where thoughts blur and your body simply exists. I wanted to create a safe sonic space to turn to in moments of panic. The choir at the end becomes a gentle wake up call, returning to the surface after drifting into stillness.”

The song’s soundscape mirrors that intention: Subtle ambient textures, faint water sounds, and naturalistic synths give the track a dreamy weightlessness. Its centerpiece – a choral swell made from over 50 layered voices – gently lifts the listener, like air filling lungs after a deep breath held too long. It’s not just catharsis; it’s rebirth.

There’s also something cinematic in the way Glang builds emotion with restraint, choosing calm over crescendo. Her voice – delicate yet full of feeling – carries every note with grace and care. “Float away, my dear / Leave it as it was,” she sings. In those words, there’s a quiet wisdom: A willingness to let go of control, to be carried by the current instead of swimming against it.

“Underwater Skies” follows Glang’s debut EP The Game (2024) and a string of editorial recognition, with praise from outlets like Sounds on the Couch and Ear to the Ground Music calling her “spellbinding,” “intimate,” and “remarkable.” Her folk-pop songs blend Nordic influence and personal storytelling, drawing comparisons to artists like First Aid Kit, Fleet Foxes, and early Joni Mitchell. She’s recorded across Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and the US – and this next chapter promises even more deeply felt and delicately crafted songs.

Lucie Glang may have written “Underwater Skies” in a moment of personal overwhelm, but its impact is anything but fleeting. It’s a song to return to when the world gets loud – a soft space where breath, body, and being are enough. Where the only thing you need to do is let go.
