Regular readers of Atwood Magazine will know that we’re massive fans of Lauran Hibberd. With her new single “Old Nudes,” the Isle of Wight-based indie rocker once again showcases her boldly individualistic and whip-smart lyricism – and as always, the song is practically overflowing with animated energy. Serving as her third single since her incredible debut EP Everything Is Dogs, the track evidences that there’s no chance of Hibberd’s originality subsiding any time soon.
I wonder what he’s doing now
I bet he’s kicked back
in a Seaview house, with my money
I wonder what he’s thinking about
I bet he’s running out of ways to tell everybody
That he has a dirty photo of me
And he’s stored it on his iPhone 3
You can see it by the look in my thighs
Want you to send it to some bigger guys
Hibberd tackles the track’s subject matter with a beautifully unabashed confidence that’s extraordinarily energizing. Seemingly unafraid of self-depreciation, Hibberd provides an introspective look at youthful naivety, managing to perfectly encapsulate the whirlwind of emotions that define adolescence.
Hibberd’s unfaltering willingness to tackle subject matter that some songwriters would perhaps understandably shy away from is unquestionably one of the secrets behind her success.
It’s the unwavering honesty that’s embodied in her frank lyricism that’s allowed her to craft her own intimate experiences into songs that touch upon multi-faceted and mind-bogglingly complex emotions.
Ah, ah
Did you have to come around again?
Ooh, ooh
Missed you like my last payment of rent
Why, I
Did I have to try and comprehend?
All the money that I spent
making nothing but my bed
It’s at her live show that her astounding ability to connect with her audience becomes evident. Although the majority of Hibberd’s tunes embody enough emotion to incite her crowds into frenzied mosh pits, it’s in moments such as “Shark Week” that her ability to craft profoundly affecting lyricism stunningly shines through. Behind her infectiously exuberant energy is a songwriter who crafts lyricism that creates accessible anthems from piercingly personal experiences.
Speaking of “Old Nudes,” Hibberd tells Atwood Magazine that the song “is probably my most Weezer influenced track to date, it’s coated in sarcasm and playfully explores the ideology of being young and quite frankly naked with another person. It holds resentment and laughs at its own past.”
I hope you got it figured out
I’ve seen you skating into town, with your mother
I started rolling windows down
I was gonna shout out something about fucking others
But he has a dirty photo of me
And he’s stored it on his iPhone 3
You can see it by the look in my thighs
Want you to send it to some bigger guys
Discussing the song’s accompanying video, Hibberd adds, “The webcam on my old laptop has seen some sites in its life, but never quite to this extent. The isolation influenced music video, filmed, directed, produces and starring only ME is OUT NOW. There’s something quite special about not giving a damn, and this song and this video cements that idea. I can’t wait to cringe at this in six months time.”
Although “Old Nudes” sees Hibberd introspectively examining her past experience, there’s an unrelenting forcefulness and spirited dynamism embodied within the song that fills the track with vicious verve and unadulterated elation.
Despite the current global situation, 2020 is still poised to be a breakthrough year for Lauran Hibberd.
With only one EP released to date, Hibberd already has two headline tours and support slots with Hippo Campus and The Regrettes under her belt. Given the traction she’s already built, it’s certain that as soon as we’re all allowed out again, Hibberd will be bringing her enthralling live show back on the road.
You said you wanted, me to be honest
So I told you that I hated your face
You were letting down the human race
I don’t want to be like you
Stuck in your old photo booth
I don’t want to see it too
You’re looking at me like I’m nude
Ah, ah
Did you have to come around again?
Ooh, ooh
Missed you like my last payment of rent
Why, I
Did I have to try and comprehend?
All the money that I spent, making nothing but my bed
