We’ve all experienced our fair share of challenges, obstacles, and upheavals over these past two and a half years, but hardship didn’t start with the COVID-19 pandemic, and it doesn’t end with it, either. Singer/songwriter Tom Speight has been living with Crohn’s disease for well over a decade now; it’s resulted in multiple hospital stays and even more health scares. You’d think it’s the bane of his existence, and it very well might be – yet Crohn’s is as much a part of his identity as is his acoustic guitar, if not more so at this point in the game. For better or worse, it’s why he sees the world the way he does; it’s why he stops to smell the roses and take in life’s beautiful little moments. Speight opens himself up to life, love, and happiness in his beautiful new song “Roll the Dice Again,” a heartfelt and hopeful moment of truth and intimate vulnerability.
catch a plane. i’ll see you in the morning
catch my heart. when you see it falling
where ever you my land
where ever you my stand
i ain’t sleeping, roll the dice again
see the sun rise & cast a shadow
see you down the road and i will follow
time is your side
even when your on the slide
i ain’t sleeping, roll the dice again
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the music video for “Roll the Dice Again,” the second single off Tom Speight’s forthcoming new EP, You & I (out September 16, 2022 via Nettwerk Music Group). A singular shining talent in the folk pop space, Tom Speight is a one-of-a-kind singer/songwriter with a heart of gold and a voice to match. He’s been a regular face and “artist to watch” on Atwood Magazine since 2018; in featuring his 2019 debut album Collide, we praised the artist’s way of leaning into sweet harmonies and basking in a radiant wash of acoustic and electric guitars, not to mention his personal and intimate lyricism: “Inspired by loss, illness, hope, and love, Collide is the engaging, emotional debut record Tom Speight was always meant to make… It’s a testament to his songwriting talent that Speight manages to make old emotions feel new again.”
Speight returned even stronger on 2021’s sophomore LP Everything’s Waiting for You, an exhilarating outpouring of love, joy, connection, and raw gratitude. “A sweet celebration of life’s beauty and wonder from someone who’s seen so much of it stripped away firsthand… it’s a resounding reminder of how good it is to feel life around us: To see, hear, touch, smell, and taste the world, and soak up all it has to offer us each and every day.”
In short, Speight has been counting his blessings for years now. His music has long had that extra spark of light that comes from having known real darkness. Even still, there’s something sincerely refreshing about the uplifting outlook he dons on his latest release. He spills his heart and soul out in a spirited chorus brimming with honest, earnest passion:
and this life is a gamble
heaven knows i know it well
and these words are just angle
time will tell, you know it will
i ain’t sleeping, roll the dice again
“‘Roll the Dice Again’ is a song about my relationship with Crohn’s disease (something I’ve had for 15 years),” Speight tells Atwood Magazine. “The feeling of keeping faith that things will get better and being open to letting love in my life.”
“Roll the Dice Again” follows April’s title track “You & I,” an exceptionally sweet and tender ballad that found Speight singing, “You don’t ever have to doubt I will love you endlessly. Nothing is forever, except you and I.”
“A lot of the EP was recorded to tape at Abbey Road Studios, trying to capture as much of it as live as possible,” the songwriter explains. “For example, ‘Roll the Dice Again’ is purely live. Tracking the acoustic guitars as one was a rare joy. I also produced and wrote a lot on my own, which was something I’ve never done. This EP documents a time when I fell back in love with the acoustic guitar after being inspired by lots of ’70s singer/songwriters like Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, and Joni Mitchell.”
