A fresh, buoyant dose of dazzling UV euphoria, Ruti Olajugbagbe’s new single is a dazzling expression of self-love and slowing down, reconnecting to oneself and being present in the moment. Jazzy and joyful, “Sunrise” is pure and unadulterated: A sweet indulgence dwelling in the moment, taking a deep and well-deserved breath and relaxing for a while.

My Sunrise - Ruti
My Sunrise – Ruti
Draw a line across the sky
straight into a cloud and out the other side
wanna take you far away
far enough so you forget the mess you made
Somewhere that you can tell me
what’s been on your mind lately
maybe a place that we both know
Three days and nights you’ll find out
those things you worry about
they’re out of your control

Released January 22 via Ruti Sounds / Croydon Boy, “My Sunrise” is Ruti’s first single of 2021 and her latest release since last summer’s “Closer to You.” Like a musical marriage of HONNE and Arlo Parks, “My Sunrise” is a vivid indie pop exhale swimming with seductive sounds and stirringly direct poetry.

Hailing from Essex, England, Ruti Olajugbagbe is perhaps best knwn for winning the seventh series of The Voice UK. She released her debut EP Racing Cars in 2019, and now finds herself entering 2021 with a cool, contagious confidence. Working with Wayne Wilkins (Beyoncé, Leona Lewis), Ruti evokes a charming calm – the same kind of stillness and wonder we might feel while marveling at a dawn or dusk. She captivates in a serene, tranquilizing chorus:

And we got time so lay back unwind
and stay up with me and my sunrise
you can try to release your mind
and stay up with me and my sunrise

“My Sunrise” is the second single released off Ruti’s forthcoming EP, out later this February.

“’My Sunrise’ isn’t really about or for anyone in particular,” Ruti tells Atwood Magazine. “In some ways I wrote it for myself. It’s a reminder that often there’s a lot more time to do things than I think I have and have to allow ourselves to stop or slow down sometimes. Obviously I wrote in a COVID free time, so I was imagining taking a break somewhere else for a while, but I still have to give myself space to breathe working from home, because it gets so overwhelming.”

Too much concrete in the way
I just want to run free in that open space
brush the dust right off your bones
don’t watch it settle let’s get up and go
Cos we got time so lay back unwind
and stay up with me and my sunrise
baby try to release your mind
and stay up with me and my sunrise

A quintessential cathartic release, “My Sunrise” is as refreshing as it is expressive. Ruti is starting 2021 off right with a soaring, unencumbered embrace of the present. She holds nothing back in her music, glowing with the same hope and possibility of her vivid lyricism.

Silver and gold
please let me hold
you here with me
don’t turn away
sit down and stay
and you will see
We got time so lay back unwind
and stay up with me and my sunrise
you can try to release your mind
and stay up with me and my sunrise
stay up with me and my sunrise
stay up with me and my sunrise
