Acclaimed platinum artist Lil Skies broadens his horizons to explore the influence of alt-rock on his iconic hip-hop sound in his latest album ‘The Evolution of the Rose.’
‘The Evolution of the Rose’ – Lil Skies
Lil Skies is a pivotal force in today’s rap landscape.
He’s a coveted collaborator who’s worked with artists among the likes of Lil Tecca and The Kid LAROI. Not only that, but he’s a centered, stand alone artist who boasts lyrical prowess over haunting melodies. His new album, The Evolution of the Rose (released June 27 via Big Noise), is no different. Lil Skies maintains that same vulnerability with his listeners, now more than ever, while exploring themes of fatherhood, mental health, and his rise to fame.

The 14-track project tells a complex, cohesive story on how the tough lessons we learn in life shape our perspectives as artists. His opening track “Sick and Tired” reminds each listener that they remain in control of their own narrative. It’s a harrowing, triumphant track that celebrates overcoming the odds that stack against us. “Burn (feat. Landon Cube)” is a high point of the album that highlights the synchronicities between Lil Skies sound and the evolving influence of alt-rock on his work. Championed by a powerful hook at the core of the track, riveting beats, and ear-catching melodies, “Burn” is an eccentric anthem that tells the story of Lil Skies’ journey as a musician.
Revealing more on his track “Burn,” Lil Skies confides, “It’s growing through the fire, pushing myself creatively, and really leaning in when it comes to being authentic to myself.”
Third track “Ganja” is a return to Lil Skies roots as he lets loose with a dopamine-inducing party anthem. It’s no accident that “Ganja” is followed by “2Much 2Fast (feat. Landon Cube).” Lil Skies opens up about the fast-paced, pressure-plenty atmosphere that clouds the reality of fame. Landon Cube returns on “2Much 2Fast” as a constant thread throughout the album who lends his hard-hitting, potent vocal to the track.

“My Anxiety” is a turning point on the album as Lil Skies pivots from the thrills of the external world and looks inward. It works hand in hand with sixth track “The Loners” which chronicles Lil Skies introverted tendencies. These songs in cohesion make me question the implications of fame and how existing in the public eye has changed Lil Skies from the person he was before. “Falling Backwards” opens with a classic Lil Skies melody that stays stuck in your head long after the album is over. He continues to question if his hard work and artistry will ever be enough to satisfy his version of success.
“Windows Down” returns to the carefree, sun-drenched side of Lil Skies as he transports us to an effortless cruise in his passenger seat. “Bright Side” leans into his free spirit and natural optimism as he eases his own insecurities over soothing riffs and upbeat vocals.
“X’s And O’s” reflects on the tumultuous phase that follows a breakup and how we sometimes must recalibrate our emotions in the aftermath. Followed by eleventh track “Chaos,” Lil Skies confronts the disordered nature of the world around him. The ultimate takeaway is that the only thing you can control is yourself.
“Wildfire (feat. Ravenna Golden)” tells the story of pursuing a relationship while knowing it was bad for you. Lil Skies remains open and vulnerable with his listeners, even if the truth is hard to admit. Thirteenth track “Renegade” returns the focus to himself. It’s an empowering headbanger that reasserts his willingness to do anything to make it to the top. Closing track “Benjis” feeds off the spirit of “Renegade” as Lil Skies takes advantage of every second in the spotlight.

Not only is The Evolution of the Rose a turning point for Lil Skies thematically, but also sonically.
He worked closely with John Feldmann on the project to draw together influences of alt-rock and hip-hop. Feldmann is known for his work with Panic! At the Disco, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, and The Used. These hard-hitting riffs, coarse vocals, and pressurized percussion come through seamlessly throughout the album.
Gearing up to perform alongside Trippie Redd at Toyota Arena (Ontario, CA) on September 12th, Lil Skies is embracing his moment. The Evolution of the Rose proves to be an impressive next chapter in his career. All that’s left to wonder is what he’ll do next.
