One hit and I’m higher than I’ve ever been, one kiss and I’m hooked on your medicine…

Infatuation can be intoxicating: It’ll take your breath away, knock you around, and change your life for better or worse. There’s nothing like it: That pull of connection and knowing, that lure of lust and mutual desire. Back after a move from Los Angeles to New York City and an exciting label signing, indie rock band Momma have a fresh new elixir to express love’s allure. Grunge-fueled and passion-driven, the feverish “Medicine” is an outpouring of raw emotion capturing the unparalleled drug-like euphoria of intimacy. It’s a sonically dark song full of light, effervescent revelry. Grunge music has seldom felt so free.

Medicine - Momma
Medicine – Momma
Spoonful of sugar
you bring me down to my knees
So many colors
You touch me
Uh-huh, you’ll be my medicine
Measuring doses
Every day of the week
I get addicted
When you touch me
Uh-huh, you’ll be my medicine

Released November 17, 2021, “Medicine” arrives this fall with the announcement of Momma’s signing to Polyvinyl Record Co. in North America and Lucky Number Music for the rest of the world. Following the band’s celebrated sophomore album Two of Me (released June 2020) and a cross-country move, “Medicine” finds the alternative group – consisting of singers/guitarists Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, Aron Kobayashi Ritch, and drummer Zach CapittiFenton – dwelling in a special space.

The band’s throttling bass and heavy drums may not scream “I’m in love!” in a way we’re used to – and Friedman and Weingarten’s opening line of “Spoonful of sugar brings me down to my knees” might feel jarring atop such deep, definitively grunge tones – but at its heart, “Medicine” is a love song. The track revels in the knowledge that you’ve got someone, and they’ve got you – as Momma sing loud and proud in the chorus:

One shot
I never really ask a lot
I’m on
A bender and I’ll never stop
One hit
And I’m higher than I’ve ever been
One kiss
And I’m hooked on your medicine

“The two guitar riffs were written by Etta and Allegra about a year before we actually brought it to the full band,” Momma shared in a statement upon their song’s release. “When we wrote the first verse, we realized it was one of the first times we couldn’t write about heartbreak – we were both in very loving relationships.”

We wanted to write about that feeling of just being addicted to someone, and how someone else’s company can really feel like a drug.

One pill to swallow
Gives me more than I need
I can be patient
Till you touch me
Uh huh, you’ll be my medicine

Together with its Hailey Heaton-directed music video (fittingly shot on VHS-C, which gives the visual an instantly nostalgic feeling for us millennials), “Medicine” is a panacea to our winter blues: An immersive, catchy cocktail that infuses us with a heavy dose of warm indie rock alongside a hearty helping of pure, unbridled passion. If love is like a drug, then music can be too: This song hits hard and leaves a mark, catapulting Momma back into the spotlight in a big way while offering a special, searing soundtrack to our own romances.

One shot
I never really ask a lot
I’m on
A bender and I’ll never stop
One hit
And I’m higher than I’ve ever been
One kiss
And I’m hooked on your medicine
