It’s about finding confidence in who you are, however dorky or out-of-place others perceive you as.

Let’s face it: Doing the same old thing is easy. The familiar is comfortable; there are no risks involved. You know what you’re getting yourself into. Adventuring out of that comfort zone can be hard: Whatever it is, it’s unknown. You don’t know what to expect, so you can’t fully prepare yourself. You have to resign yourself to a little bit of chance, and a “whatever happens, happens” attitude.

But you have to start somewhere. From puddle to pools, we start off slowly and ease our way in. Mexican alt-rock artist MAUMAUMAU inspires us to try new things with his brave and bold new single “Get Your Feet Wet,” a buoyant, catchy anthem full of deep grooves and cool confidence. For those of us who hesitate to venture beyond the safe and familiar, this song is a fun reminder that it’s okay to hesitate – but it’s still worth getting out there.

First day, new plan of attack
Got the Neon rubber bands on my braces to flash
Got a Bowl cut, and I’m dripping in ranch
Anything to get into the band, yeah
Rock songs, couldn’t kick it with jazz
I’m a last pick, but I crush the exam
I’m a first draft blendin’ in with the rest
Whoever said you need to be the best just

Released August 18, 2021, MAUMAUMAU’s “Get Your Feet Wet” (featuring Curtis Kelley) is a fun, frisky, and funky bit of indie rock charm and world-wise wisdom. The song is MAUMAUMAU’s first single since this May’s debut EP MeowMeowMeow, which Atwood Magazine described as an ode to the underdogs: “Whether you’ve got the millennial blues or a digital heart, overloaded or overwhelmed, these five tracks will remind you that you’re special; that you’re someone worth fighting for.”

“Get Your Feet Wet” finds MAUMAUMAU – the solo project of LA-based Mexican rocker Mauricio Jimenez – back doing what he does best: Offering a few words of advice while having a good time. Jimenez soars in a chorus full of sweet, easy release:

Get your feet wet get your feet wet get your feet wet
Just a big kid trying to make it to the deep end
Get your feet wet get your feet we get your feet wet
Trend the feeling flavor blast it on repeat yeah

“‘Get Your Feet Wet’ is about trying new things,” MAUMAUMAU tells Atwood Magazine. “It’s about finding confidence in who you are, however dorky or out-of-place others perceive you as. It’s a foreshadowing of future songs to come for me as I start to move away from my comfort zone stylistically. I hope the video makes you smile a bit and brings you some nostalgia cuz it’s late ’90s/early ’00s AF!”

Between the fat bass line and the buoyant drum beats, “Get Your Feet Wet” drips with a warm, radiant glow. Stream the song below, and consider adding a few lines to your New Year’s resolutions list. It’ll be worth your while just to try.
