There’s nothing like the cathartic release we get from basking in the rain: It’s dramatic – a visceral, vivid rush of feelings that fill you up like water might a bucket. Whatever gives you that rush, it’s worth soaking it up for all it’s worth – because life is short, and you might as well spend your time well. Australia’s Little Quirks revel in a moment of relief and raw release in their stunning new single “The Rain,” an exhilarating, unbridled chant of freedom and joy.
I’ll go, I’ll go
I’ll go out in the rain
And find myself some love along the way
‘Cause lately I’m in disarray
Oh lord, I wanna go out in the rain
But I couldn’t lie to you if I tried
And I wanted, oh I wanted to ask you all why
Why I long
Why I long for the rain
Oh lord, I wanna go out in your rain
Released March 11, 2022, “The Rain” is Little Quirks’ first single of the year and their first single since signing to Glassnote Records. The folk pop trio of sisters Abbey Toole (guitar, vocals) and Mia Toole (drums, vocals) and their cousin Jaymi Toole (mandolin, vocals), Little Quirks have quickly shot up out of their native New South Wales, making a name for themselves over the past half-decade through their stunningly cinematic folk rock sound full of radiant guitar playing, lush production, and rich, emotionally-charged vocal performances that stop the ears dead in their tracks.
“The Rain” is an especially powerful release, and a welcome return for the family band following the slew of singles they released in 2020 (which included the Cover My Eyes EP, a collection that takes the best of bands like The Staves and Mumford and Sons, and packages it all up with a bit of Australian flare). A song of self-reflection and self-actualization, “The Rain” is an uninhibited, bright and feverishly-fueled anthem. Little Quirks manifest that dynamic, singular feeling of sweet release in their music, coming to life with dazzling color as they invite all to join them and revel in life’s wonder and charm.
We call to unknowns
And I’ll wait and I’ll wait til everyone knows
And I’ll reach out and hold on
And I’ll scream and I’ll scream
Til we’ve all had our fun
Hey ya ya di ya da
“Since I was very young I have had a deep love for the rain; for the sound, the relief, and the excitement it always brings me,” Little Quirks’ Abbey Toole tells Atwood Magazine. “Whenever I wake up and it’s raining, it brings me joy. This song was written on a stormy night in my bedroom. I just imagined being out there running and dancing around in it and this song came out. We actually recorded a lot of this song in our home studio in the backyard which is our favourite place to record. For the ‘Hey Ya’s’ in the chorus, we wanted a big, roomy chant so we hired The Grove Studios near our house. Everyone in the session that day (including the sound engineers & producer) sung the chorus as a big group. We’re really happy with how it turned out.”
“I decided I wanted rain to feature in the video for the track somehow,” she adds. “Director Tim Swallow brought that idea to life using a barge and a rain machine which is basically just a fire hose and pump! We nearly froze while shooting, it was a cold day! But the video turned out well in the end. The track is epic so we wanted an epic video to go with it. And we were very lucky with the sunset we got that day!”
I sing alone and dance above the moon
And scream aloud in hope I won’t be blue
‘Cause something will bring me back to you
Oh lord what I find it will be true
We call to unknowns
And I’ll wait and I’ll wait til everyone knows
And I’ll reach out and hold on
And I’ll scream and I’ll scream
Til we’ve all had our fun
Hey ya ya di ya da
Why I long, why I long for the rain
