There is something so refreshing about a song that makes you want to be present – for it, and for yourself.

It’s a special song that makes you want to savor the moment you’re in, rather than worrying about what has happened in the past that may haunt the future. This is especially hard when you’re falling in love. The fear of what’s next can take away from the moment at present. British multi-instrumentalist and producer Finn Askew makes us feel presently in love with his effervescent, pop and R&B fueled new single, “Used to This.”

Released August 18, 2023, “Used to This” is 22-year-old Askew’s first single in nearly two years – his first since 2021’s sophomore EP, Tokyo.

As he puts it, “I wrote this song over two years ago, wanting to capture that feeling of something new and good coming into your life, something you don’t want to ever let go of. Obviously I’m talking about a lover in this song, but there’s so many other things that can give you that feeling. I wanted to come back with a song that’s fun and has a lot of personality. It feels like the perfect way to start this new era of Finn Askew.”

It feels like the perfect way to start this new era of Finn Askew.

While the song weaves us through the peaks of those new moments of love, it doesn’t invite fear or take us to the pits. He delicately and vulnerably weaves in desires of not wanting to let go, but not in a way that makes you think they ever will.

A ticking, energetic drum beat matched with a groovy deep bass guitar invites you into this song like a windows down drive on a sunny day. Askew’s relaxed, but precise and distinct vocals seamlessly begin to weave between the beats:

I’m not used to this brief romance
I don’t know how this chit chat goes
but with you yeah I feel like France
but anglais is all I know
that’s why imma take a chance
take a hard left off the same old road
never look back to where I’ve been
only way that I’ll go

Askew’s vocals slow and expand for the pre-chorus:

truth is girl lately
I’ve been such a mess
you’re the only one to save me
get me out my head

The music drops for just a moment before Askew harmonizes with himself in an effervescent chorus:

i could get used to you
i could get used to this
i could get used to being around
somebody having nobody
that I’d rather be with

The second verse is as fun as the first, exuding the feeling of letting yourself feel happy and basking in the moment. It is unapologetically present.

week days feel weekender
summer in December
you control my temper
you put out my embers
baby come waste my time
we could be the perfect crime
I can play the song you like
over and over again

The song continues through the pre- and chorus again, before getting to a bridge that keeps the energy high, while bringing a different vulnerability to the track:

don’t let me go
don’t let me go
don’t let me go
don’t let me go

Out now, “Used to This” is Finn Askew’s first release in nearly two years.

We have a feeling this is the beginning of a beautiful new era for the rising artist, and we can’t wait to watch it unfold.
