Forget the misty-eyed version of nostalgia.
On his new single “fallin,” Nashville-based artist Jyou blends Southern soul’s warmth with the slick edge of alternative hip-hop, creating a track that feels like a long-lost classic and a modern pulse-check. Produced by Austin Luther, the song drips with funk, groove, and an easy sense of joy, all while exploring the rush – and the risk – of love.
For Jyou, chasing that sound wasn’t about reinvention, but about leaning into his roots.
“Growing up listening to all of the Jacksons’ music, I’ve always been drawn to the fun of the funk and groove sounds,” he says. “Songs that make you want to dance with that free sense of liberation.”

That sense of freedom runs through “fallin,” not just in its bass line and crisp percussion, but in the way Jyou shapes the lyrics. The track zeroes in on the push and pull of falling for someone – the exhilaration, the fear, the surrender.
“Vulnerability is edgy,” he explains. “People would rather hide behind a mask than be real. I try to not overthink it and just let the words flow.”
It’s that balance – between openness and cool confidence – that gives “fallin” its staying power. It’s as likely to make you sing along in a crowd as it is to make you think about the last time you risked your heart.
That mix of accessibility and depth has long defined Jyou’s work in Nashville’s underground hip-hop scene, where he often collaborates with KON, his longtime partner and co-winner of Nashville Scene’s Best Hip-Hop Act. Their bond, he says, is built on intention: “working intentionally on short- and long-term goals… getting consistently better every day, however that looks.”
It’s the same mindset he applies to helping shape Nashville’s evolving music identity – a city still largely known for country. “A lot of groundwork, being in the community and a part of it,” he says. “It’s important for the next wave to grow their network. Constant collaboration and support helps sustain longevity.”
That collaborative spirit is also the foundation of Inner Circle, the collective Jyou founded to strengthen regional connections. For him, it’s as much about building culture as building careers. “The knowledge and connections gained over time has helped not only our individual careers, but also the community we collaborate with,” he says.
Musically, “fallin” marks a shift from the blues-rock grit of earlier tracks like “Nest” toward something more groove-driven and mood-focused. “We went for more of an emotional route with all of the tracks,” Jyou explains. “Music that makes you feel something – whether it’s tapping your feet, moving to the groove, or recalling memories.”
With Luther’s production, that vision came to life, marrying the funk and groove of the ’70s and ’80s with a distinctly 2025 energy – a sound Jyou calls “modern nostalgia.”

Live, that translates into instant connection.
“Love songs that are super simple are catchy from the first listen,” he says. “It’s an easy song to get an unfamiliar crowd to sing because of those elements.”
That accessibility isn’t accidental. It traces back to the values Jyou absorbed growing up in a church-centered, musically rich household. “What you put into your body always affects you,” he reflects. “Even with the emotions and dynamics of the music, I’m always trying to make something that overall has positive intention.”
If “fallin” is your first introduction to Jyou, he hopes that impression lingers: “The feel of a Jyou song has a certain warm feeling reminiscent of a hug or a good nostalgic feeling.”
